Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

Granholm still burning cash on the altar of cronyism

The governor continues to insist a Democrat shutdown of state government is the only answer to Michigan's budget crisis without a massive $1.7 BILLION tax hike because we've already cut to the bone.

God bless them, the MSM is starting to pick up on the fact that that's hardly the case.  In fact, the governor continues to defend her decision to grant a high-dollar campaign donor and political ally a $116.7 million contract to build a new Michigan State Police Headquarters to replace the old building they currently lease for $1.  Of course then they'll have to pay to lease the new building, too.

And as damning as that paragraph might sound, it doesn't hold a candle to Steve Wilson's report.

Update [2007-9-28 13:27:10 by Nick]:Please note... the original version of this story contained a YouTube video of Steve Wilson's report. Mr. Wilson contacted RM to inform us that the video had been edited, removing criticism of Republicans. I live in Grand Rapids and never saw his original report and, force of habit, went to YouTube to find a copy.

Regular readers of RightMichigan will certainly note that I've got ZERO problem going after Republicans. This site is about the issues, not a partisan label.

Having been made aware of the editing I've yanked the embedded video. You can watch Wilson's original broadcast report HERE.

Click below for continuing coverage of the story including Right Michigan's own discussion on the topic going back to early June.  Oh, and a copy of Joel Ferguson's extensive list of contributions to the Michigan Democrats scratching his back on this deal, including Governor Granholm and members of both the state House and state Senate.  Connection?  Nah...

The compromise is simple... (none / 0) (#1)

On the Dems side, they kill any new funding idea, and hold the line at FY2006 levels on most projects.  They abandon any new ideas, such as the MSP headquarters, jobs funds, increased funding for schools, etc.

ON the GOP side, they agree to a TWO YEAR tax hike to cover the difference.  TWO YEARS.  At that point, it becomes an election issue that is bound to favor the GOP providing, of course, they can find a way to downsize government in 2 years.  Then again, given how the GOP let it bloat on their watch, I'm not optimistic (yes, I'm calling out the GOP leadership on that one!)

Sen Schauer is running for Tim Walberg's Congress seat.  This would be a great gambit to hamstring Schauer when he's running for that office.

Cut the building project and create JOBS (none / 0) (#2)

$100 Million.  When we have a building that works and we are paying minimal for.  This is not in the best interest of tax payers.

right Michigan hats off to you for posting this.

$100 Million can be utilized in many ways to add much more value to the state.

If there is anyone left who thinks this is an honest woman, then they need to watch this report.  They will change their mind.  Steve Wilson catches her in a bold-faced lie and she won't back away from it even when she's caught.

We should all be circumspect as she runs around telling people that state government has been "cut to the bone."

    I just called the Gov... (5.00 / 1) (#4)
by geek49203 on Thu Sep 27, 2007 at 09:46:09 AM EST
I just called the Gov's office.  The nice guy told me that the Gov had it all figured out 7 months ago, and it was up to the legislature to enact her wisdom.

Of course, it didn't include changes in MESSA.  It did include a new State Police building.  And, it included a bunch of ideas that the GOP would never agree with even if we had the money.

Even when I told him that I'd start a recall petition if Jen shut down the gov't, he wasn't budging.  Jen thinks that her proposal is the only "compromise" available, and she's gonna shut down the State to get it.

    And here's the catch-22, Geek... (none / 0) (#5)

Her Democrats in the legislature won't approve her budget.

Now that's failed leadership at best.  Incompetence at worst.

Cut to the bone? (none / 0) (#6)

It is to laugh. The Governor can't even pick the low-hanging fruit off the fiscal trees. Did I say "can't"? It's "won't" -- else she would have that many fewer plums to hand out, in the form of judicial appointments, to loyal supporters. See this: (third letter)

Especially the part where Ferguson states that politicians would never do something because of contributions, but only based on what's best for the State.  Almost fell out of my chair laughing.
