Portrait of a Tax Hiker: Kathleen Law (D-Gibraltar)

"Basically, this entire package was delivered by Democrats." - Andy Dillon, Detroit News, October 2, 2007.

This is the sixteenth in a series of looks at specific members of Dillon's tax hike caucus. The Democrats hold a 58-52 lead in the House. A shift of just four seats returns control to the Republicans, a caucus, for what it's worth, that held the line in impressive fashion against the Democrats' tax and spend gambit. According to Andy Dillon anyways.

Four seats is more than doable. A move to a common sense approach that protects jobs and Michigan families is doable. Just a matter of getting rid of a few bad apples.  Today we move over to eastern Wayne County where a handful of votes in 2002 helped pave the way for the biggest tax hike in the history of the state of Michigan.

    STATE REPRESENTATIVE KATHLEEN LAW: (D-GIBRALTAR)

We've spent a lot of time over the last year expressing frustration with various elected officials who turn around after their election not to be at all who they claimed to be during the campaign.  But every now and again it's still possible to find someone who takes office and acts exactly as advertised.  If for nothing else they deserve a little bit of credit for at least being up front about who and what they are.

It's that sort of back-handed compliment that I'm forced to pay to State Representative Kathleen Law from Michigan's 23rd House District.  Law first won the seat back in 2002 running as a liberal and in that, at least, she hasn't disappointed.

Oh, sure, you've got the occasional pre-election pledge like this made to Gannett newspaper services:

I support tax policy that makes the taxes on business fairer and flatter. We need to lower the rates and widen the base.

And sure, she's voted against those stated principles time and again but one chronically broken promise is hardly a blip on the radar with this current crop of Michigan Democrats.

Law claimed a 259 vote victory in 2002 (with a Libertarian candidate drawing 552 votes away from a significantly more conservative Republican candidate) and coasted to re-election in 04 and the Democrat tsunami of 2006.  And now, in her final two years in office she's determined to go out with a bang (while turning Michigan's lights out with a whimper).  In doing so she presents us with a reminder of the critical importance of every vote in every district across the state entering the 2008 election year.

    Read on...

Here's what 259 votes in a swing district (with 552 cast for a wholly non-viable 3rd party conservative) will get you in a big-government Democrat like Kathleen Law:

Law is proudly in the pocket of N.O.W.

Law is proudly in the pocket of Planned Parenthood.

Law is proudly in the pocket of radical gay-special-rights group Michigan Equality.

Law is proudly in the pocket of The Michigan Education Association.

Law is proudly in the pocket of the pro-aborts at Michigan's List.

The Representative has had her campaign coffers stuffed with contributions from everyone from Emily's List to the Sierra Club to The Progressive Women's Alliance to the Michigan Trial Laywers Association not to mention her support from the MEA.

And Law has consistently been one of the most liberal votes in the entire Michigan legislature, repaying her special interest groups of choice with pro-abortion, anti-life votes, radical environmentalist votes, support of the Trial Lawyer Enhancement Act (complete with retroactivity) and a vote against MESSA reform and in favor of spending $400 million a year to line the pockets of the teachers unions without one penny's worth of product delivery to show for it.

An ultra-liberal Democrat can bite you when she's in the minority, don't get me wrong, but since being empowered by the Democrat majority Kathleen Law's voting behavior has begun to almost literally kick Michigan while we're down.

And it reached a head last month when she cast two fateful votes to sacrifice Michigan's economic future on the altar of big government.  Kathleen Law voted YES on a $613+ million sales tax hike on services and she voted YES on a nearly $800 million income tax hike on struggling moms and dads across the state.

There may not be a better example in the State of Michigan of the importance of each and every vote.  I guess we can thank Kathleen Law for that, too.

    We Already Know (none / 0) (#1)

that all the democrats voted for tax increases.  We also know that the democratic party loves taxes and can never get enough.  That said, I think what you are doing Nick is a waste of time.  Instead of posting what we already know I think it would be a wise use of space to target those republicans who back stabbed the party and the hard working men and women of this state.
