The smaller states walked away from the table and would not have ratified the constitution without the second house (senate) being elected to represent the states (not the people directly)and also without the power of the electoral college.

The density of the larger states would relegate the smaller states into mere by the way votes, and would take away much of the power inherent in the system the way it was designed.

It was the way the states had agreed, it is appropriate, and it is the law.
