. . . on this one, Inkster.  Scotty Boman insists on running as a Libertarian, and invariably scores in the low single digits in November (name recognition notwithstanding).

For all that I admire the LPM's tenacity when it comes to idealogical purity, these fellas just don't seem to get a basic concept of Duverger's Law.  Any third-party that wants to have an actual impact on a statewide or national election has to spend at least three consecutive election cycles (so, six years minimum) building the necessary infrastructure from the ground up.  By this I mean that said third party should start by winning small, local, nominally non-partisan elections (think of township boards, school boards, city commissions, and the like), and build upward from there.

If the LPM were to do this, then it's conceivable that they'd have an unignorable statewide presence come the 2016 elections ... but not sooner.  They don't; instead, the Libertarians insist on a "be heard, not herded" mindset that trumpets a third option from the rooftops, all the while ignoring the fundamental electoral mechanics of the Single-Member District-Plurality methodology that's been in place since America's foundation.

Rather, LPM does as they have always done.  They file where they want to (which is damn near everywhere) and then do very little by way of effective advertising (by either door-to-door or broadcast media).  It always seems to baffle them when their presence on Election Day doesn't even amount to a drop in the bucket.  The LPM leadership I've spoken with on the west side have been asked the question regarding establishing a precinct-by-precinct ground game and starting small to establish an elected presence statewide.  Their response has always been to ignore such council in favor of just yelling louder ... and the concept of Einstein-Hopper Insanity always seems to pop into my head.
