The Republican Party had a grand total of zero good candidates running for President in 08. Of the four major candidates, Huckabee, McCain, and Romney, only two showed ideological consistency once they started running in the primary. These were Giuliani, who is unapologetically moderate or liberal on pretty much every issue outside of national security, and Huckabee, who has no shot at ever winning anything because his economic policy is nuts. Then you have McCain, who chose to respect the Republican establishment and move towards the Right during the election, and Romney, who decided to run as a conservative despite his record in Massachusetts. It is squarely on the Right for failing to come up with a viable true Conservative to run with in the election and frankly, even if you did, then whoever you nominated probably would have been eviscerated by Obama because by the end of Bush Jr., nobody liked the GOP that much.

Secondly, I do not like it when the government extends itself through new programs and the like. Government should never be anything but the last option to resolve a problem if it can be resolved by citizens themselves. I'd rather see our country solve its welfare problems through acts of private charity than acts of public welfare whenever possible. However, there are times when private initiatives fail or are corrupted themselves so that they do more harm than the government would. And considering what a mess the current health care system is, I'd be willing to consider a well-formed government alternative if it were a) limited and b) implemented in a fiscally responsible manner.

Thirdly, the endgame of truly Conservative free-market principles allow for the empowerment of private interests over most citizens. Conversely, the endgame of Liberal principles of government is the USSR. Conservative social principles result in religion being supported by the state. Liberal social principles result in religion being suppressed by the state (re: France). I am an Independent because I believe that if our country moves too far to the Left or Right, the net result will be tyranny in some form, be it the tyranny of a monopoly or the tyranny inherent in socialism.
