I had an interesting discussion with the local rep a few weeks back about this issue.
Her meeting focused mainly on public education in general (i.e. state funding, state standards, schools of choice), but there were a few of us who brought up CCSS and keeping it out of Michigan Schools.
Surprisingly, she knew very little about the subject as well as most of the other people attending that evening (educators, PTO, parapros).
We had given her some facts on CCSS along with some websites to research (including telling her upfront which direction those websites were leaning).
In her defense, she said that she would look further into the matter.
For the time being, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on this.
As for what they are trying to do to our kids, I hate to surprise you, but they have been running with this bunk for some time now.
I've already had younger relatives and neighbors kids asking me for some help on some of their schoolwork given they fact that they all know what a political/news junkie I am.
I had absolutely no problem in helping them with their assignments, along with pointing them in a direction other that what was strongly implied by their teachers.
They receives a passing grade on their assignments.
I was also told that their teachers were not very happy with what was turned in. But, they couldn't really argue with their work because I also provided them with enough supporting material to back up what I went over with them.
From what I've been told, it also turned the heads of the other students in their classes as well.
Bottom line here: Parents shouldn't worry only about what is in the pipeline, they also need to be cognizant of what teachers are using right now in the classroom.
I just might surprise you more than you think.
