AFP-MI Applauds Michigan Senate for Refusing to "Partner" with Feds on Washington Health Care Takeover
LANSING, Mich.--The grassroots free-market group Americans for Prosperity-Michigan called the State Senate's refusal to establish a partnership health care exchange, a resounding victory for anyone who opposes President Obama's health care law. Michigan joins 25 other states that have refused to help set up an exchange.
"President Obama has robbed patients, businesses, and taxpayers of their economic freedom--our legislators just refused to drive the get-away car," said Scott Hagerstrom, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. "This is a resounding victory for anyone who opposes the Washington health care takeover, and a true testament to the power of grassroots activism. It should also serve as a wake-up call to Republican governors that members of their party will not rubber stamp implementation of the president's health care takeover.
AFP-Michigan has been at the forefront of the battle against any state involvement in establishing a health care exchange, most recently opposing the supplemental appropriation necessary to set up a so-called partnership exchange. The group's activities have included distributing key vote alerts to legislators urging rejection of an exchange, sending electronic action alerts to its 87,000-plus activists across Michigan, broadcasting alerts on its social media channels, and directing hundreds of constituent calls into House and Senate offices.
"Our leaders in the Michigan Senate listened to their constituents, and wisely chose to avoid being complicit in the federal government's hostile takeover of our health care marketplace," said Hagerstrom. "Michigan should not be in the business of giving even the slightest whiff of legitimacy to misguided federal policies that rob us of our economic freedom."
Hagerstrom noted the group will now turn its attention to thanking legislators for standing tall on the issue, and will also work to oppose the Medicaid expansion and gas tax hikes.
