My Brother's KeeperBy JGillman, Section News
My brother Steve and I used to talk politics..
I have a few of them, (Brothers) but THIS particular brother and I disagreed more often than not on issues of the national political stage, policies, and who might be best for leadership. Its was a discussion over George Bush in 2003 that had our wives (watching nearby) fearing a fist fight. Several adult beverages, and a few hours of heated discussion never brought the violence our mates had expected. And we remain as always willing to pick up such discussions, and love each other as brothers do. Family is good. Especially family that can disagree to the point where blood pressures are up, yet peace will prevail in the end. The reason I mention this is twofold; to illustrate that we can have disagreements and still carry on strong family/professional relationships, and to point out that I would still tell a brother where to stick a suggestion that I donate to ANYONE in that freak show called the Democrat party! I might even tell him to wrap it in broken glass and salted tinfoil for good measure first.
And I suspect he would respect that.
An email from the Schostak campaign today complains of the negativity toward him for his donations to Democrats. Most would argue that its kind of hard to sell yourself as the leader of a political [partisan] organization if you have a record of supporting 'the other team'. He explains the Democrat donations this way:
DONATIONS ATTACKBut he still remained in the 'family PAC' for years. He did not say to his brother, "Hey Bro! Donate personally, and I will do the same, and see you at thanksgiving". Bobby Schostak's name over several years and races remains connected with those donations to the Granholms, the Pelosis and others who are plain and simply, "the enemy". I understand that some Republicans might have donated to family members, though family members, and perhaps even to others based on similar arrangements, but ought there not be a little higher expectation required for a leader of the party? Perhaps it should be recognized WHY such a PAC exists? If it is accepted practice to donate to both sides of the fence, then certainly political fence straddling is the rule within their business model. What does that neutrality mean to a business that it is so important to maintain? Is it the new reality or old reality that creates such relationships? And how does it translate into the political arena with which we have such a great concern? We as Republicans are supposed to get Republicans elected, and effect Republican principles. Presumably those are conservative, and in opposition to the principles held by the 'Frankfort school' professors on the other side. There is no more room for compromised principles in our leadership. Adding this to the losses in this last cycle, we can no longer afford the luxury of fighting ourselves in the manifestation of those who play both sides in any way. I'll close by saying that I don't believe Bobby Schostak considers himself bad for the party. I recognize the inability to see in oneself the failure brought to an institution. I'll also go as far as saying that I do not believe the "Dele-Gate" fiasco was Bobby's idea. The 'mastermind' if you will, has already been dealt with. However, Bobby and Sharon both had an opportunity to correct it before it developed into the full blown mess that it became. There are folks who find this unforgivable. They have been waiting for this convention to set things straight and return some level of meaning to what it means to be a Michigan Republican. Bottom line? The reality that this convention could be the end, or perhaps a new beginning for the Michigan Republican Party ought to encourage a little reconsideration from even the strongest Schostak supporters.
------------- For complete context of the email, (presented in an effort to be as open and fair to the process as possible) I have added it in its entirety below:
