    Michigan Parents have asked for choices in their children's education and are now applauding our reform-minded legislature.

    A shout out to Sens. Pavlov and Colbeck, as well as Rep. Lyons and McMillin for their part.

    Lansing, MI -- As parents, educators and policy makers this week commemorate National School Choice Week, parent members of the Michigan Chapter of Public School Options.org today applauded state lawmakers who have helped make Michigan one of only four states in the nation to earn an "A" grade from the Center for Education Reform.

    "Each of our children have only one chance at childhood and one chance at an education that will prepare them to take on the world," said Sandy Smith, Chair of the Michigan Chapter of Public School Options.org.  "There's little wonder why parents are clamoring every day for more and better choices in their children's education."

    Continued below the fold

    Earlier this month Stanford University's widely respected Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) published a new study analyzing the difference that charter schools are making for kids in communities across the nation.  It found that Michigan students enrolled in charter public  schools are performing remarkably better than their peers in traditional public schools and getting significantly more out of each and every school year.

    According to the study, 35 percent of Michigan charters show better learning gains in reading for their students than the traditional school district in which the charter is located.  Only 2 percent of charters show lower learning gains;

    • 42 percent of Michigan charters perform better than their traditional counterparts in math, while only 6 percent perform at a lower level;
    • According to researchers at Stanford, these results translate into the average charter school student receiving the equivalent of two more months of learning each year in reading and math than his or her district school peer;
    • More staggering, the typical charter student in Detroit gains nearly three months achievement for each year they attend charter schools.

    "The Director of Stanford's research center credits these astounding results in large part to the policies, practices and opportunities that Michigan lawmakers have put in place to empower parents with education choices, especially in low-income communities," said Smith.  "Here in Michigan we applaud our lawmakers who as recently as last year passed school choice reforms that are helping write our state's success story one education at a time."

    The Michigan Chapter of Public School Options.org is an organization founded by parents who are dedicated to supporting and defending increased public school options in Michigan.  More information is available at http://www.publicschooloptions.org/michigan/.
