Michigan Parents have asked for choices in their children's education and are now applauding our reform-minded legislature.
A shout out to Sens. Pavlov and Colbeck, as well as Rep. Lyons and McMillin for their part. Lansing, MI -- As parents, educators and policy makers this week commemorate National School Choice Week, parent members of the Michigan Chapter of Public School Options.org today applauded state lawmakers who have helped make Michigan one of only four states in the nation to earn an "A" grade from the Center for Education Reform. "Each of our children have only one chance at childhood and one chance at an education that will prepare them to take on the world," said Sandy Smith, Chair of the Michigan Chapter of Public School Options.org. "There's little wonder why parents are clamoring every day for more and better choices in their children's education." Continued below the fold
Earlier this month Stanford University's widely respected Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) published a new study analyzing the difference that charter schools are making for kids in communities across the nation. It found that Michigan students enrolled in charter public schools are performing remarkably better than their peers in traditional public schools and getting significantly more out of each and every school year.
According to the study, 35 percent of Michigan charters show better learning gains in reading for their students than the traditional school district in which the charter is located. Only 2 percent of charters show lower learning gains;
