Don't Let The Billionaire Have His WayBy JGillman, Section News
Says the rich guy.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder did a series of videos regarding the ballot initiatives we will see in November. Opining on issues one through six, Snyder makes a number of reasonable points, and its worth going through them to see where you might agree. Or not. The last proposal discussed is the DRIC, where he (the text says) says: "If there's one proposal we've heard a lot about, it's Proposal Six. It didn't have to be this way. More and the video below the fold.
Of course if the governor hadn't pushed his effort beyond that which the legislature was willing to pursue, it never would have happened. It (the initiative) was Rick Snyder's creation all along. The obsession with his bridge is frankly pretty creepy, and along with the move to squash FOIA of his communications with other entities, one would have to be a moron to trust him on this. It should be noted that his VETO of transparency was in the face of an absolute unanimous legislative request.
"We need the new bridge to Canada - and modern infrastructure - if we want to reinvent Michigan and bring more and better jobs to our state."Actually, if it is to service the importation of Chinese made, Canadian assembled products? (read: Automobiles)OK. Reinventing 'need'. So lets assume that the current 45% of peak traffic is an indicator we need a new bridge. We have existing ramps, and infrastructure in place to service a second bridge span at the Moroun site already. Why does it have to be elsewhere? Eminent domain will be used on our side to destroy the existing neighborhoods to build the new service ramps, so why not let the Canadians deal with it on THEIR side? "Thanks to an iron-clad agreement, we can build a new bridge to Canada without any cost to Michigan taxpayers. The project will help industries all across our state grow stronger which would lead to important long term job creation. In the short term, it will help create 10,000 new construction jobs.Chinese and Canadian jobs. Just saying. Anyhow, cost is over 40 million already. Add to this a new infrastructure re-route, land acquisition, planning, and the loss of a Michigan business in the process. 'Free' has become quite expensive.
"The new bridge will be a great benefit for our state, and we shouldn't let one billionaire and his special interest monopoly get in the way."That was, by far, the funniest line. The governerd, using class warfare to rally support for his obsession. That 'billionaire' special interest is an employer of Michiganders. Don't you think for a minute that he has anything but a potential parking lot after a new Canadian owned and operated international crossing is built. When the first vehicle passes over and pays the toll, the roadblocks go up. One can only wonder WHY our chief executive would purposefully destroy a Michigan based company and put so many out of work? Its almost as if Snyder has a grudge to settle.
