Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    The Governor's Obsession

What is it that drives the Rick Snyder to buck the legislature, give the people of Michigan a shrug, and essentially give the finger to privately owned business?

It surely cannot be strictly economic development, as the low hanging fruit known as Right-To-Work is still quite doable.  It could not be a concern that growth will leave us stranded with an unworkable transport solution between Canada and the US, as simply adding a couple of booths for the Bluewater apparently eased traffic considerably this last holiday.  Add to that, the amount of traffic over the DIBC is still at historic lows.  And to boot, the owner of the DIBC wants to build a second span at NO cost to the taxpayer, and has actually done due diligence by purchases of property and right of ways on both sides.

No, there must be something else.

    It almost seems ..emotional.

    More below the fold

Rick Snyder has an obsession with either "screwing" Matty Moroun, or proving that he is the boss, and "dammit no-one can tell him NO!" Its the only thing that explains his ongoing search to complete something that has been repudiated repeatedly as a boondoggle, and unnecessary.  Even if it requires a dance with the monster he created:
"Since enabling bills died in a state Senate committee last fall, Snyder has been seeking a way to authorize Michigan's participation in the $2.1 billion New International Trade Crossing project without going through the Legislature -- where Republicans have long opposed the span.

The governor's office declined to discuss specifics.

"It is still all very much in progress. Conversations continue," said Geralyn Lasher, Snyder's press secretary. "There are different options out there. We've said all along we're exploring the options available to us."

I had at one point thought it might be some kind of financial windfall that must be at the end of his rainbow.

A pot of gold perhaps, as a reward for sticking his neck out politically and doing something that makes no sense from an economic return perspective.  It seemed that no one would persist against such headwinds of common sense, and for so long, unless there was a golden ring to reach for.  A Holy grail perhaps.

But at this point I do not believe it is something so simple as corruption and graft.  I believe he is capable of it, as anyone MUST BE who so abuses the public trust with taxpayer funded operations like the MEDC or MEGA.  But after examining the potential toll revenues, traffic patterns, and economic health and manufacturing strength and trading potential with Canada, it occurred finally that no other reason for this ongoing obsession could possibly explain his willingness to plod forward with such a loser of a deal for Michiganders and their children's economic dowry.

Maybe he is just a bit like the Canadian $2 coin.
