DNR SS Squads A Black Eye For SnyderBy JGillman, Section News
Rodney Stokes, a parks and rec guy appointed under Snyder's predecessor Jennifer Granholm, is pig hunting.
Under the guise of "invasive species" enforcement, the DNR's director Stokes, has set loose a force on small farms and family run operations which for decades have raised certain types of swine that are considered dangerous and damaging in the wild. These types of pigs can apparently reproduce quite easily. However, the pigs are said to be aggressive, and damaging to forests and wildlands if allowed to get loose. so by fiat, the Director decided to simply eradicate the problem by destroying the livelihood of game pig farmers and other swine herds that MAY have certain strains of the feral breeds in them. In July of 2011, the department, likely under the suggestions of Snyder's advisory team gave the operations that might be affected a few more months to kill their stock. And the the Michigan Animal Farmers Association had appealed for declaratory relief citing the rules for invasive designation. MAFA argued on behalf of those small farms that what the DNR is calling an invasive danger, does not meet all the requirements to be classified as such. The suit by MAFA unfortunately did not meet the appeals court standard, which effectively strengthened executive authority in ALL areas. More below.
The suit by MAFA relied on :
IV. REQUIREMENTS FOR LISTING SPECIESContainment of the pigs has not been proven ineffective, yet the DNR decision is allowed to be carried forward with impunity. What this means, is that an executive branch of our government once again is allowed to step out side the law, and offer its own form of oppression on the population one segment at a time. The farmers whom have been on the battle front, and in the news recently have made one point very clear. Their swine are contained. Buried fences, long term operations, and experienced operators back up the stated claims. In fact, feral swine damage has yet to be documented by the DNR in its action. It simply COULD happen. Its bad precedent. Some believe the decision to squash small farms and decades old enterprises is as a result of big agribusiness. It wouldn't surprise those of us who watch with wondering eyes what drives some decisions in the executive branch if there wasn't a tie, a quid pro quo, or a payoff in some way. We don't trust or government. It matters little if it is a Democrat or Republican in charge when the oppression looms from on high. The guy who loses his farm to the random decision making by an apparently unaccountable agency could care less about labels. The dreams that are made nightmarish by what amounts to a "taking" are colorblind to Red & Blue, as political banners. They all simply want to be left alone. The tyranny exhibited by recent actions of those who are a an extension of Rick Snyder's team is unacceptable. Snyder has no business sitting idle while the families in Michigan are being attacked by his minions in such a way. I leave you with this vision of recruitment for an administration that is out of control.
