The Law & The EDCBy JGillman, Section News
Frederic Bastiat in 1850 wrote a pamphlet called "The Law" Which may have been a response to rising socialism in France. Half way through it, this 160 year old treatise on what we do collectively to provide the fairest treatment has given incredible inspiration on a number of topics.
This particular quote is relevant especially to those in Michigan Government who would use the proceeds of our work in a way that offers special favoritism toward one class or group at the cost of another. From The Law: "But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay, for it is not only an evil itself, but also it is a fertile source for further evils because it invites reprisals. If such a law--which may be an isolated case--is not abolished immediately, it will spread, multiply, and develop into a system."Mr Snyder, as a smarter than the average bear governor, do you get it?
The incredible similarity to all that is wrong today is pervasive content in the remainder of this too often forgotten "pamphlet."
