Austerity Measures Really Tick em Off

Sometimes the inanity of the left is unbearable.

If ever there was an argument for Right To  Work, it is being made somewhere near the middle of the state.

If I had to guess, I would bet there are instructors at CMU that aren't real comfortable participating in an illegal strike.  Imagine how a young instructor, who feels fortunate enough to have found employment in Michigan, must feel when told by his/her bosses, (the union) that he/she cannot go to work.

    Rock? Meet hard place.

"Following several rounds of unsuccessful contract talks, the Central Michigan University faculty union said it would strike on the first day of classes today, affecting more than 21,000 students."

In the end, this could actually be an opportunity. But first let us consider the negatives for some.

The thought of being fired for breaking the law, and possibly losing bennies and an income that most in the private sector would love to have, ought to give pause to such reckless actions.  Incomes listed below are as of 2010, and do not include other income such as per diem, paid training, and other benefits.  What has to be tough, is for those instructors who already get paid considerably less than their professorial counterparts, and must also participate or face ongoing vitriolic response from those who would work to see them removed in the future.

The CMU board of trustees has a tough job to be sure. From the CMU Board of Trustees page:

"... the board retains ultimate responsibility for academic matters and reserves authority over such areas as the mission and goals of the institution; admissions and retention policies; policies governing intercollegiate programs; faculty promotions, sabbatical leaves and tenure; establishing fees; accepting gifts; naming facilities; and a number of other areas."

They are also tasked to "ensure financial solvency." Or something akin to it.

The offer by the university?  It apparently was a 0% increase in pay.  After bargaining with the union for the fluff, it (0 percent) was probably all that was left. I would have to imagine that in order to ensure such things as solvency, those decisions are somewhat necessary.

    The opportunity? - Go below.

    Fire the top dogs.

Fire them for considering such a thing that is on its face illegal, hurts the kids and parents who bust ass to send them there, and especially hurts taxpayers during a recession. Save $28 million right off the top. Permanently retire (they ARE breaking the law after all) the striking full professors as a start. According to this chart there are 292 of them.

OK, well maybe CMU only saves about $10-$14,000,000 after replacing them with instructors and assistant professors (many of whom are likely a part of the strike action) who work for less.  And perhaps it might even offer hope for future employment to those graduate students who are used most often to actually do the teaching.  The message would be delivered pretty well actually.  After seeing that group with 97% tenure become history, The remaining members of the union will fall in line quickly.

And for those who have the GALL to continue teaching, or taking on a little more and helping the kids? Advice by another union not directly involved in the fight:

Kenlea Pebbles, from the CMU Union of Teaching Faculty, said that union is "discouraging" members from taking on additional duties.

"As a union we have taken a position to encourage our members to not take on the additional coursework, if asked, or any additional duties," Pebbles said.

The UTF represents non-tenured faculty at CMU.

Make em sweat, Pebbles.  I mean your own membership.  They can be fired even easier.

And something else to consider is that 97 percent of the tenured union voted yes to this action.

I wonder who the 3 percent might be?

Indeed, the time is nigh for right to work, and the ability to join or not join a union for fear of losing your job.  As seen by this strike it would make a difference in our schools.  It allows those who disagree with tactics and outright lawbreaking, to bypass that problem and actually remain responsible and in service to our education system.

Or maybe its time for the baby to rejoin the brackish unemployment pool of bathwater with regard to taxpayer support in a bloated university system.

...calculations, based on just professors alone, CMU is spending on average almost $340k/professor.

Another interesting link illustrates the growth in spending in that area compared to the change in student enrollment in just five years.

While CMU's enrollment has gone up just 1% during that time, faculty pay has shot up almost 24%.

compare these #s to the fact that, according to US Census Bureau, average MI Household income fell 21.3%

One last income number really drives home the story of Michigan's decade decline.  The median household income for Michigan dropped by 21.3 percent between 2000 and 2009
