Act Like A Republican?By JGillman, Section News

Dick Morris says Rick Snyder should act like a Republican, and in the process draws out the hard core "re-distributionists." Darrell Dawsey writes at MLive: Matty Moroun is rich enough. He doesn't need or deserve a second bridge. (Personally, I wish someone could take the first one from him, too.) Free enterprise is fine, but private citizens shouldn't be in the business of owning international border crossings. Our borders, and the economic and national security issues they generate, are a matter of public interest. God help us if that is the reason Snyder wants the bridge. Dawsey's screed is something that appears often enough in the dankest corners of totalitarianism to keep us on our toes and sleep with an eye open. Always. Snyder's wishes of another bridge makes perfect sense in some ways, and little in others. He is a "Milliken Republican" which brings a brand of centrism that has too much in common with the Dawsey think, that government ought to have control of all things no matter how miserably they fail under government control. Detroit Schools? Detroit itself? Perfect examples of Centrism allowing a minor scratch to develop into full blown gangrene. Why not invite such catastrophe when given the opportunity? Perhaps a little brick and mortar money poured into the patient's [amputation inviting] open sore infested hole will fix it? Maybe such things need to be questioned a little more thoroughly. Yeah so Morris is paid by ABC.
Maybe Morris ought not be the guy challenging one's Republican credentials. It really doesn't play as well as it could if he were not paid by Morouns outfit. It reeks of hard lobbying. But since he brought it up, it would be prudent to point out we have had plenty of challenges here at RM on this issue and others. So yeah, it's pretty old news Dick. But to the point you are right. The issue really demands an answer as to WHY a Republican would want to place Michigan Taxpayers in such a potentially expensive situation. Favors? Rewards? Misplaced zeal to pick yet another winner before it all falls apart? And anyhow ... Revenues would in all likelihood, not meet projections, the bonds would never get paid off, and the tolls wouldn't even cover the cost of paying for operations. There is no mystery pile of money waiting to be used to cover such things. And as for the Canadians being last on the list to get paid back for their contribution, here is a newsflash: They likely don't expect to get paid. Pure speculation folks, but this process serves them in some other way. Perhaps it is planning for the area which is served by Moroun's bridge currently, or maybe even a Windsor area highway routing savings that will happen as a result on the Canadian side. Whatever the reason, there could be no reasonable expectation of recovering their investment in the next few decades, as long as manufacturing and traffic itself is down. Just ask the question: "If tolls don't pay the operation and maintenance costs, how can any debt be serviced?" Then listen. Carefully. A reasonable answer would find its way here, if there was one to be had I'll bet. This boondoggle is not becoming of a Republican to be sure. But it shouldn't take a Dick Morris mouthpiece to drive that point home.
