Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    The Big Picture

Matty Moroun will be repairing the Depot.

The nearly 100 year old building will see a couple of improvements, or repairs so that it becomes more attractive to developers:

"We're doing it because it would be much easier to help a developer to come up with a package to use the depot if some improvements were made ... so that's what we're doing."

Some might see it as a ploy and PR stunt to gain support for the Ambassador Bridge Company in its fight against the state (Snyder) plan to build a publicly owned international bridge, and it may be.  However, once again, the money being spent is not only from a private source, but it has a planned end; the redevelopment of a blighted area.

And while Detroit has not yet shown its repentance yet, it will be rewarded with another attempt at bringing back something it chased away with the socially progressive policies that destroy nations.  IMO Detroit doesn't deserve Moroun or the International Bridge Company.  Especially considering the backing it has given to the public span idea.  The idea to destroy a private business so that the state can have management rights for the crossing into Canada might be the plan of our Governor, but it will not be supported by this writer as I am paying taxes and in my right mind.

    More ~

In fact, the city of Detroit, looking at the new census changes is likely eager to see the new permits arrive.  the city spokesman says:
"Obviously seeing improvements to the central depot to make it look more aesthetically pleasing is something we would certainly support. But they haven't pulled any permits as of yet. We await their next move."

I am sure they do.  In fact between the repairs restoring some value, and the permit fees that will likely pay for the annual salary of one or two of Bing's protective detail, that plan will be stamped and pressed forward ASAP.

    Cha-Ching!

But while they accept the IBC money for the permitted repairs done to the central depot, the city of Detroit will likely forget to offer any support to the company that may well be a key component to its restoration in the future. This project demonstrates a willingness to look beyond what the motor city has become.  To see further than the perpetual blight city leaders have brought for too many decades.

Perhaps there is hope for Detroit, though it will likely not arrive through government, but in spite of it.

The long range goals of Moroun and the IBC might well be seen through this small start of repair to a facility not used in over two decades.

Seeking profit, this company is willing to bring employment, and restore value to the city.  Rather than allow the wealth of our forefathers to crumble, the restoration shows signs of optimism by a developer and entrepreneur. Optimism and a vision of something that seems too far away for most who look at Detroit with proper skepticism.

What is in the big picture?  Perhaps we get off his back and find out?

    The big picture? (none / 0) (#1)

I see this as a chip used by the Moroun & the IBC in order to get Gov. Snyder to drop the whole DRIC/NTIC/Gordie Howe Bridge debacle.

I'm not seeing people very enthusiastically supporting the idea of using taxpayer money to support a bridge that no one really needs and won't be able to pay for itself, especially when roads not more than two miles from it a crumbling back into dirt.

And while I'm not the biggest supporters of the leadership in Detroit, these repairs are WAY overdue.

No business owner outside of Detroit would be ever able to let their property look the way MCS does, for as long as it has, and not pay some coin or spend some time behind bars for it.

In its day, MCS was a beautiful building. After it was closed the drunks, junkies, crack-heads, prostitutes and vandals had moved in and destroyed the place. To call it a shell of its former self would be an understatement.

A new roof and windows are literally window-dressing, the interior of the building is self-destructing (one of the stairwells is so corroded that sections have collapsed). If he has plans for the building, he'll need to do a whole lot more in order to make that building usable again.
