Money, money, money, money...monnnney!By KG One, Section News
If this isn't Exhibit "A" of the final outcome of democratic leadership, I don't know what is.
The City of Detroit is literally in ruins, but not quite there financially yet (h/t to CS). You would think that the opposite would be true, but I'm not quite sure how they managed to pull this off. Their educational system is roughly in the same boat at local government. Parents who are able, are pulling out their children en masse (and now burdening surrounding school systems who now have to deal with students who aren't accustomed to something called standards and outcomes). That mass exodus is causing a massive hit on DPS's bottom line. And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse... {How's that for a story tease -- Click below for more).
...today's Detroit Free Press lets one of the worst kept secrets in the Tri-County area out of the bag.
To keep what few students they have, and to keep those nasty state and federal overseers out of THEIR schools, DPS has resorted to changing the grades of failing students to make things seem that they aren't as bad as they really are. Who cares if little Johnny and Suzy can't read or write (but manage to excel in Phys Ed), we've got a reputation to uphold here in DPS! And what does DPS do to teachers who do try to make a difference and maintain standards? They get labeled as unable to "impart knowledge". Now you may say,"Okay, KG, We get the point. Sending a child to DPS is the equivalent of child abuse, only the cops don't come looking for you. So what does this have to do with money?" I've mentioned before that DPS is looking for a handout to get them through this financial rough patch. Well, Rob Bobb is at it again. He's pushing for someone in Lansing to introduce a bill to "assure lenders that they will be protected if the district is forced into bankruptcy." He goes on to say that,"...such legislation wouldn't 'cost the state a dime' nor transfer any of the district's debt burden to state taxpayers. The real purpose, he said, is to,"...satisfy the district's bondholders even though bankruptcy is 'not being even remotely considered'." Whew! I feel better already knowing that Michigan Taxpayers won't be on the hook like we would've been with the DRIC Project last year. So tell me again, how do you really calm lenders without the state assuming any responsibility whatsoever? And would we even want to given the fact DPS is unable/unwilling to do their only thing that it was tasked to perform?
