Mr. Cain did the opposite. He made himself available to the media and denied the allegations with absolute fervor. He did not hide out in a hotel somewhere hoping the media jackals would lose interest and leave him alone. No, he boldly stepped up and confronted the issue head-on. He did it with integrity, sincerity, and believability.

And while the Republican establishment may have also assumed (and hoped) Mr. Cain's candidacy was over, they were also sorely disappointed.

Meanwhile, the real Republican party - you know, us - well, many of us decided we'd had enough of this well-worn tactic of character assassination. We've decided we weren't going to put up with it any longer. Even many of us not fully on board the Cain-Train find ourselves fed up with this never-ending BS. The Left and the Republican Establishment are NOT going to choose for us who our nominee will be. The real Republican party - those of us in fly-over country who will vote in the primaries and participate in the caucuses - we will make that decision.

It turns out that Mr. Cain's campaign is actually benefiting from this slanderous development. It would appear the Left's assassination attempt not only failed - it backfired. We're hearing reports that Cain's campaign set a record one-day fundraising total yesterday - the day the story broke wide open. It has been reported that Cain's campaign raised in excess of $300,000 in donations just yesterday.

Personally, I have still not decided who I will vote for in the Michigan primary. Coming in late February, the race may be over by then as it is so horribly front-loaded (no doubt intended to help Mitt Romney). But I have to say, if Mr. Cain handles the coming days and weeks as well as he's handled this vicious, racist attack by the Left so far, I might just jump on board that train of his.
