The MEDC is a failure.
So much so, that its first chair Rick Snyder is now jumping on the bandwagon proclaiming that "selecting winners has got to stop" on the Ron Jolly show on WTCM this morning. In his following statements, (I couldn't take notes on all of them as it was my drive time) he talked of how it just caused higher taxes on other folks in Michigan to give the breaks to the would-be Michigan business concerns, and targeted businesses from out of state. You think? Rick? Hello? How curious however, that the nerd who would be king stopped short of calling such a complete failure ripe for complete dissolution. He would only say amounts should be reduced. Huh.. it seems something that is bad, is umm.... BAD.
Cell phone at hand, I had an opportunity to dial in to the show and caught the producer/screener Kimber. I requested they ask Rick about his own MEDC credit for one of his companies in 2007.
They asked him. He answered.. and rather uncomfortably. He was quick to say he has an interest in some companies and they fill out the MEDC forms "just like everyone else." Then he changed the subject quickly. Just like everyone else.. Maybe like anyone else who has friends and supporters in the MEDC, an organization that finds an "original" chair NOT because of random happenstance, but because that chair was likely the great mind which spawned such an organization. The MEDC is Rick Snyder. Its his baby. And now Rick Snyder rides the convenient train of public opinion looking at the MEDC as a money drain in state government. He paints it in a way that curries favor from those who would prefer to see it limited or removed, yet stops short of calling for its removal, EVEN WITH a complete failure as a record. Perhaps if the MEDC was the child of someone else, it wouldn't be so hard calling for its aborting.
