Americans Can Speak Out: `Keep Our Nation Safe'

The failure of the Christmas Day Bomber's or the Times Square Bomber's attempts to kill hundreds of Americans may be the consequence of sheer luck, but luck is not a reliable plan for saving the lives of Americans targeted by terrorists.

We must demand that our leaders have a better strategy than depending on luck to prevent terrorist attacks and save lives. Terrorist attacks, successes or failures, take a toll on our families by the loss of lives and destruction of property, as well as in undermining our sense of security in our own homes and communities.

In the case of the Times Square Bomber, law enforcement officials apprehended him within 53 hours of his attempt to murder several hundred people in New York City. The capture was only minutes before the would-be bomber would have been airborne for Pakistan and out of our reach forever.

Based on my experience as an FBI Special Agent, I recognize what a solid job our law enforcement officers did in tracking down and capturing the bomber so quickly. Surely, no American regrets that he was caught. We would, however, have had many regrets if hundreds of people had been killed by his destructive bomb.

Likewise, because of some brave passengers on the Christmas Day flight, that bomber also was stopped, the plane landed safely, and many lives saved.

    More below the fold

While we rejoice in the providence that saved hundreds of lives in both bombing attempts, the people murdered in the Fort Hood shooting just a few months earlier were not so fortunate. Prevention could have kept that terrorist from unleashing his fury on innocent Americans.

The fact that all of these terrorist attacks got to the point of execution is a failure of intelligence that leaves us with a foreboding sense that more is yet to come. Depending on luck is not a wise or effective strategy.

Do we want terrorists caught and brought to justice? You bet we do! And our law enforcement teams are the best there is at catching the bad guys after they commit an act of terrorism. Stopping terrorists before they kill Americans, however, means having a strong intelligence effort that prevents attacks instead of reacting afterwards.

Somewhere along the line, the Obama Administration and the Department of Justice decided to shutdown certain classified forms of intelligence gathering. The Fort Hood massacre and the Christmas Day and Times Square bombing attempts reflect the loss of some very common sense tools that would help keep Americans safe at home.

As a member of Congress, I have been speaking out about these concerns, but I encourage all Americans who believe Ben Franklin was right when he said "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound cure," to speak out at AmericaSpeakingOut.com. This is your chance to demand that Washington, D.C. begin fighting terrorism with a proactive intelligence approach again, not a law enforcement approach.

We want General George Patton on the battlefield, not Elliott Ness.
