Carrying the Water and the Big TentBy pauldpeterson, Section News
"We've carried the water." A troublesome expression often used by GOP leadership. While some people make this boast, it was you and me "digging the well". It's only now that we're discovering the water we sent with them has been spilled. Our labor has been wasted, our trust compromised and our authority ignored. When we pulled our heads out of the sand last year to see the fertile land our leadership was to have cultivated, we found instead a desert of dwindling capitalism, absent our conservative agenda.
This bothers me as much as their "Big Tent" theory, which is nothing more than Progressives coaxing Party conservatives into ignoring their principles by pandering to left-wing political groups. Rather than being more inclusive, it only alienates conservatives. The Big Tent idea simply doesn't work. We already have the biggest tent ever devised - our Constitution. The catch is that it calls for limited government and individual liberty for all, but personal responsibility for each.
The Big Tent theory dates back to FDR's New Deal Coalition which included labor unions, Dixiecrats and Progressives. Recently, it's been the Democrats criticizing Republicans for lacking a big enough tent. We should not compromise our conservative ideology to satisfy our opposition. This urging is simply a ploy by our enemies to coax us into following them to the left, thereby removing the reasons people vote Republican! The Founding Fathers knew the political spectrum from antiquity to mean that extreme right is 0% government, and the extreme left is 100% government. FDR promulgated the biggest lie of the 20th Century: Since Fascists at the time were enemies of the Communists, then Fascists must be the extreme right opposing the extreme left. Ignorant logic. The Truth: they are merely two different brands of totalitarians competing for the same 100% power on the left. Political ideologies can be stretched only so far. Our Republic began firmly on the right, not the center-right; just enough government to achieve order from anarchy, yet preserve liberty. Attempts to stretch the "tent" by pandering serves nothing more than to move us left, and the Democrats know this. The resulting centrist policies produce wishy-washy politicians; we don't know where they stand in the party because they no longer have firm convictions. This is evident when politicians say things that are open to individual interpretation and lacking any real principle or direction, such as Al's slogan, "He fights for what's right." Right according to whom? It's hype and rhetoric, insinuating help for all while committing to nothing for anyone. This is where we are today with Marxists moving government toward Socialism. Any "Big Tent" talk needs the recognition for what it is: Attempts to move the GOP to the left. Progressives currently in party leadership need to be ejected from our Constitutional Big Tent so we can take America back to her original conservative roots. Perhaps then party leadership won't waste our water.
