I am not sure I had ever imagined the social networking mediums would be so crucial to a candidates effort, but considering the advantages it would be hard to ignore.

The first real experience with the mix of twitter and politics seems to have been the august 2008 effort of Republicans to have one final vote on drilling before going to break.  The Democrats holding the majority, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi holding the country hostage for her own personal gain, would not let the house have one last vote as was tradition.  Twitter served as a means for the house Republicans who refused to go home, to get the message out to bloggers and other alternative news outlets.  The #dontgo movement was born, and Michigan was well represented by its contingent of Republicans standing up for the vote, with some even returning from the airport, deciding the US' energy future was more important than the break.

They stayed, and reported... They reported by Twitter, a major part of the new social media, now seemingly a part of every politco's toolbox.

But twitter has not only been the only part of the new information revolution, as along with it Facebook has matured, and also offered new avenues of information awareness, and networking. Politicians love networking.

But politics is no the only recipient of the speedy information sharing advantages offered by Twitter and Facebook.  Now some of those who have seen the power for reaching out, see another way to share important information about what is going on inside your government, as well as a way to assist small business DO Business in Michigan.

The Mike Cox campaign has released another of its ideas for reforming government, this time highlighting the use of social media like Facebook:

"Michigan needs to make it much easier to take that first step and start a business," said Cox.

"By linking entrepreneurs and their ideas with the start-up resources they need as well as points of contact with suppliers, buyers and capital, we can help make Michigan the easiest place in America to hire people and start a business."

Michigan needs a more organized approach to assisting entrepreneurs and small businesses fighting to "get off the ground."  Knowing the right questions to ask and where to go for help can make a difference for any budding entrepreneur.  Cox believes Michigan's economic development efforts need more focus and an individualized approach.

By creating a "Facebook for Job Creators," Michigan will do a better job linking entrepreneurs and their ideas with suppliers, buyers and capital to foster economic development.  Providing budding job creators with points of contact within state government and serving as a nexus among entrepreneurs, existing companies and trade associations will help them more quickly grow jobs.

It would be interesting to see how it works out, who uses the service, and what types of relationships are forged.  But this wouldn't be the first time Cox has used the power of the internet for Michigan's government relationship with constituents.  He had previously opened the books to the AG's office, as our secretary of state had, so that we could see how our money is being spent.

Technology is promising to be means which we can better track spending, make our relationships, and now apparently develop new business models, and eventually more jobs at little or negligible expense to taxpayers..
