    Happy Birthday Ronald Reagan

Today is what would be Ronald Reagan's 99th birthday.

I am not entirely sure if there has ever been a person in the last century who was as real as the "actor president."  Certainly, the very family values, coupled with family troubles, love of god and country, and most notably, enduring love for his wife Nancy. His loyalty second to none.

In my estimation, Reagan was the last president we have had that truly believed in liberty, and how the economic slavery that government imposes on its people limits that liberty.  He was the first president who advised against a socialized health scheme, recognizing the danger of giving so much of what should be individual choice to bureaucrats and politicians.

He is as relevant today as when he spoke on such things when he was alive.  He may be gone now, but his lessons are not.

    Happy Birthday Ronald Wilson Reagan.

I could not agree more!  I only hope that more Americans get educated about him so they know what this current president is doing to us.

    I loved that man.

I hope he is not looking down on this country today, it would break his heart.

Greatest President of the 20th Century, (none / 0) (#5)

Ronald Wilson Reagan!  Ended the Cold War without firing a shot.  "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!"  Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbee, Scotland linked to Gadafi (sp).  Reagan sent Air Force and bombed his tent in Lybia.  We didn't hear from Gadafi again.  On the date Reagan took office prisoners released from Iran.  Iran was afraid of what Reagan might do to Iran to get them back!  Reagan stood for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit Of Happiness!  Wouldn't it be nice if today's elected officials stood for those principles today!

I see Mr. Reagan everytime I sign onto my computer. I have one of my favorite images of him as my wall paper. I think about him a great deal and yes, I miss him very much. He was special. He truly loved this country and her people. He was proud of what this nation meant to the world and what the people that came here from everywhere had accomplished as Americans. He understood the immigrant experience. His ancestors had come from the same area of Ireland as mine did. I don't think the left ever understood Mr Reagan. He never had a majority in either the House or Senate yet he got his agenda through for the most part because he realized that the power of this nation lay in the people. He connected with us. The people of this nation. He was one of us and that is why we loved him, trusted him and had the greatest respect for this man. He was ours. Never did this man consider himself an elite who was better then anyone else. He was always just Dutch Reagan, a guy from Dixon, IL that all in all had done pretty well in Hollywood and then politics. Thankfully we have his blueprint for success. Common sense never goes out of style as does the courage to do the right thing. He lifted the average man up, gave us real hope not bumper sticker slogans and he celebrated the greatness of this nation. He knew. He understood how important this nation is to the rest of the world. He saw it as a refuge from slavery, intolerence and oppression.
His greatest gift to us was his undying confidence in the people of this country. He knew us better then we knew ourselves and he inspired us to be better then we thought we could be. Thank you Mr President. I thank God for the life of Ronald Wilson Reagan and on this day I wish you a very Happy Birthday. I miss you more then you know.

    Reagan's Leadership (none / 0) (#8)
by Stewardship on Tue Feb 09, 2010 at 09:21:31 AM EST
I agree, and rank Reagan as one of the top three leaders of the 20th century, along with Churchill and John Paul II.

What boggles my mind is how my fellow conservatives ignore President Reagan's call to be good stewards of the environment. It was Reagan, after all, who devised and recommended emissions trading (cap and trade) as the most efficient and market friendly way to deal with atmospheric pollution.

It was Reagan's leadership that enabled the Montreal Protocol (which has prevented more global warming pollution than any other action by any other president or nation). His administration was preparing to use cap and trade to address acid rain, but it ran out of time. His successor, George H.W. Bush, signed it into law.

Contrary to the rants of populists like Rush and Sean, American industry went on a 20 year tear of innovation, job creation, and wealth building in response to that cap and trade challenge.

If he were alive today, Reagan might very well soft-sell man-made climate change or climate change in general as a major problem. But, Reagan would see the positive outcome of the actions required to transition to a cleaner energy future: innovation, new technology, increased exports of that technology, job creation, improved national security, improved trade deficits, stronger dollar, and a stronger economy as we begin investing $1 billion per day here, rather than in OPEC nations to buy foreign oil.

We conservatives have anointed Ronald Reagan as the patron saint of the movement. But,like CINO's (Christians in name only), we pick-and-choose only the tenets of his that support our own world view.

. . . I'd like y'all to check out an article that I posted here about a year ago (as my prep work for the 2009 MIGOP convention).  I have long been a disciple of Ronald Reagan (may his name be forever praised), and hold the belief that we will find someone similar to him right about the time he's needed . . . so, about this time next year.
