    Ethical Populism vs. Crony Capitalism

(The Tea Parties) are based on an "ethical populism." The protesters are homeowners who didn't walk away from their mortgages, small business owners who don't want corporate welfare and bankers who kept their heads during the frenzy and don't need bailouts. They were the people who were doing the important things right -- and who are now watching elected politicians reward those who did the important things wrong.  Arthur Brooks

The MSM has labeled Obama's post-Massachusetts demagoguery as "populism." This is reported as his "response" to the Tea Party spirit that's giving Dems the willies about November. Both Obama and the MSM can't understand why the President's reaction and their characterization of it is in fact a smear against Tea Partiers and their real concerns.

In that light, it's  worth revisiting Arthur Brooks wonderful op-ed from last spring on "Ethical Populism," the source of the excerpt above.

As Brooks explains, ethical populism has motivated millions of non-political members of the middle class to become Tea Partiers. Among other things they are deeply offended and disturbed by the hypocrisy that Michael Barone reported on this week, "Under Obama, Crony Capitalism Again Rules the Day." (h/t Capitol Confidential). There's plenty of crony capitalism going on right here in Michigan, too, from Michael Moore's pursuit corporate welfare of film subsidies (and that program in general), to bipartisan votes in the state House and Senate authorizing nearly half a billion dollars in handouts to electric car battery makers and related crony capitalists.

Thanks Jack for posting this.  I had not seen this article before.  the first paragraph of your post quoting the description of the tea partiers is 1000% spot on.  It bears repeating on any blog each and every day until November 2010 until the liberals understand that we have had enough.  The public trust has been broken, stomped on and spit upon by politicians who feel entitled to keep shaking us down to the last penny.  I want them ALL gone and I want term limits!!!

    Thank you! (none / 0) (#2)

    Whether it's "ethical" or... (none / 0) (#3)

... unethical, populism is a weak foundation to build any political movement on.  The various populisms that have sprouted in the U.S. over the centuries all are based around reaction, on blaming some ill-defined "them" for our problems, and tend to devour themselves and blow away.  Also, populism seems inevitably to get co-opted by some demagogue.

    Yes, blame a well defined "them" - pols (none / 0) (#5)

"Populism is a weak foundation to build any political movement on - (it's) based on blaming some ill-defined "them" for our problems"

Absolutely. The blame should instead be attached to a very well defined "them," one that has volunteered for being held to account. I refer to the political careerists who constitute our state and nation's political class, of course.

When some rent-seeking film producer or "green-energy" scammer seeks a subsidy from government, that's human nature operating within the incentive stucture created by the political class. Heck, in most cases it's just business managers being fiduciarily responsible to their shareholders.

So blame the pols who created that rotten incentive structure - whether it be Barney Frank who helped create the incentives for banks to make bad loans, or Michigan Republicans who helped create the film and "green energy" subsidies.

Going after the careerist pols is ethical and proper. Going after the rent-seekers amounts to trying to pretend-away human nature. It's worse than a dead end politically, it's fundamentally foolish.
