Which end up?By JGillman, Section News
A Cap Con article reminds us that Michigan's governor was clueless about the MEDC program not producing desired results. In the face of near constant and deserved criticisms that were based on actual figures, Jennifer Granholm somehow was able to ignore that fact that all the money poured into economic advancement programs for business by government somehow didn't seem to produce any results of substance. From the story:
In a recent interview, outgoing Gov. Jennifer Granholm said she had no idea that the job creation announcements over the course of her two terms had been contradicted by studies finding that just over 70 percent of the bragged-about jobs were never created. James Hohman, fiscal policy analyst for the Mackinac Center, was stunned when he learned that Granholm told the Michigan Information and Research Service that she hadn't heard of any evidence contradicting the rosy job scenarios she had been promoting through the embattled Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Of course! Now this makes complete sense.. I/We have been writing about it here, and elsewhere that it takes a truly backward political ideology to harvest such failure from a state that had the best crop of success to begin with. More than once its been pointed out on these pages that Michigan once upon a time had the most resistance to recession, and recovered from down turns the fastest. Backward policy HAD to be the culprit. Perhaps it was some other orientation as well? (Finished below)
There is no question that the Mackinac center scholars have considered the policies of government picking winners as ill advised. However facts are hard to dispute. The studies have consistently shown a failure of the MEDC to produce anything of substance which would justify the expense to the state taxpayers. The studies themselves are bolstered by anecdotal WTF stories like quicken loans moving from the suburbs into the city of Detroit for a STATE grant of 2 million dollars.
The slant this governor may have seen as an excuse to ignore the center's warning call is unfortunately purely political. Her dismissal of the jobs created studies might well have been explained away by a 2007 interview on a local radio station where she claimed "those guys are out there." (sorry no transcript available) She dismisses them because they disagree with her substance. The real numbers were verified by the state's own agencies: Then in April 2010, a report from Michigan's Auditor General verified the Mackinac Center study. It too found that about 28 percent of projected "direct" jobs from deals announced by the MEDC came to fruition. She wouldn't even listen to her own administration.
The quote by James Hohman below, might actually offer an explanation of this bizarre phenomenon: Hohman wrote that the MIRS story "shows that she is an ostrich with its head in the sand about the failures of the programs she supports." Indeed.. It might also explain how such governance is so upside down. When did the polar reversal happen again? Some folks might think its time to lay off the guv who shall be former, soon enough, and let her fade away quietly. Perhaps allow a little dignity as she walks away from the executive position in Lansing. No. This need to be made very clear: This person should never have any job that relies on taxpayer dollars ever again. she should never be recognized as anything but the failure she represents. The inside out and upside down nature of governance exhibited through little stories like the one above serve more than notice upon the MEDC supporting types, but rather in the larger picture paint a broader picture of what NOT to do for a healthy state. Rewarding her with any more public dollars as income is akin to saying "thank you, may we have another?" If an executive ostrich has its head in the sand, is there is still one end making decisions?
