Detroit Free Press Pens Editorial Hatchet Piece On MI AG Mike Cox

You know, the Gubanatorial race has barely started, and the Detroit Free Press is already on the warpath for the head of AG Mike Cox. This is one of the most blatantly dishonest, if not THE most dishonest, editorials that I have ever seen. Even for the freep, which is well known to lean so far left that they are about to fall over any minute. Here is the title of their dishonest hit-piece: Your taxes at work for the NRA (and Cox). Let me just cut to the chase. The freep is wringing its hands because Cox filed an amicus brief with the SCOTUS regarding an unconstitutional ban on handguns by Chicago politicians. The freep says Cox, and Michigan, have nothing to do with this case. What the freep doesn't mention is that 33 other states also filed amicus briefs! They all do this because they don't want bad law to hit their states! Cox is doing exactly what his job requires of him! Here is the press release via The Examiner: Cox   Joins NRA in Fight against Chicago Gun Ban.

Attorney General Mike Cox today announced he has filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the National Rifle Association's (NRA) challenge of a City of Chicago ordinance banning possession of most handguns.

Cox joined at least 33 other states in supporting the NRA's request for the court to hear an appeal in National Rifle Association v. City of Chicago, a local case with national implications.

"The right to keep and bear arms is fundamental," said Cox. "The Supreme Court recognized this in the Heller case, and I am confident they will protect this right yet again. No government should impinge on the basic right to defend yourself."

The amicus, supporting the NRA's petition for a Writ of Certiorari to appeal the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals' June decision favoring the City of Chicago, will be filed with the court today. Below are passages from the amicus brief:

"As our Founding Fathers recognized, and as this Court recently reaffirmed in District of Columbia v. Heller, 128 S. Ct. 2783 (2008), the right to keep and bear arms secured by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is a critical liberty interest, essential to preserving individual security and the right to self-defense...

"Accordingly, the Court should grant the petitions and hold that the Second Amendment secures a 'fundamental' right that can no more be abrogated by local government than by the federal government."

Cox previously signed an amicus in District of Columbia v. Heller, supporting the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia's gun ordinance in that case. Cox's efforts to protect gun rights also resulted in more states recognizing Michigan-issued CCW permits. When Cox took office in 2003, only eight states recognized Michigan-issued CCW permits. Today, 35 states recognize Michigan-issued CCW permits.
Where was the freep in denouncing the amicus brief that Cox filed in the Heller case? Since they accuse Cox of kowtowing to the NRA here because of a governors race that hasn't really started yet, what say they of the Heller brief? What a bunch of loon leftist cranks over at the freep! Here are some snippets to the hatchet job that the freep put out there (I'll highlighted only the most blatant hypocrisy):
When he isn't running for governor, Mike Cox is Michigan's attorney general. And it was in his capacity as the state's top law enforcement officer that Cox announced with considerable fanfare Tuesday that his office has filed an amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down a strict gun control ordinance in Chicago.

If you are wondering how a man with two full-time jobs has time to worry about what local officials in Illinois are up to, the press release issued by the AG's office ("Cox Joins NRA in Fight against Chicago Gun Ban") provides a clue.

Get it? Michigan's attorney general (did we mention he's running for governor?) is backing the National Rifle Association, which has the political clout to make or break gubernatorial wannabes like Cox and isn't afraid to use it, in its valiant fight against Chicagoans who want fewer handguns in their city.

And just to show he's not afraid to put your money where his political interests lie, Cox is deploying the AG's own taxpayer-supported staff to do it.

The obvious answer is that Cox is in that fight to curry favor with the one of the nation's most potent political lobbies. He wants his party's gubernatorial nomination, and he's pulling out all the stops to get it.

We just wish he would do it on his own time, and with his own money.

First of all, where was all this hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth when Granholm was the Attorney General here in Michigan and ran for Governor? Can anyone recall such a hit-piece on her essentially accusing her of having dual jobs? And why no mention that 33 other states also filed amicus briefs? Apparently all by their Attorney Generals too! The freep not only ridicules Mike Cox for doing exactly his job, but kicks at the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well. Note in the above snippet the freeps view that the NRA is fighting "against Chicagoans who want fewer handguns in their city," as if scrapping the 2nd Amendment would do a darned thing about illegal guns in the city. Because - you know - it's done so well for the crime rate in D.C. The only thing this ordinance does is restrict legal guns owned by law-abiding citizens. This is exactly the kind of thing that SCOTUS rejected in the Heller decision. Here's another telling snippet from the freep editorial:
let's forget that Michigan's attorney general made his reputation as a homicide prosecutor in Detroit, where another fellow might have learned something about what the unregulated proliferation of handguns can do to a city.
What a bunch of morons writing this. As if regulating legal guns will somehow have some effect on the illegal. Just another liberal platitude trotted out that has been proven false wherever it has been tried. By writing a false hit-piece regarding Cox and a possible NRA connection, the freep has shown itself to be firmly planted in the anus of John Cherry (did I mention he was running for Governor?). They might want to think otherwise, lest they come down with some flesh-rotting disease. Heaven knows they've spent the last 8 years in Granholm's bum already. The damage is cumulative!

Every lawyer swears an oath to the Constitution. Mike Cox has done it several times. AG's file amicus briefs all the time. Mike's no different. Granholm did it. Frank Kelley did it. It's part of the job.

As far as the 2nd Amendment goes, Mike's been very good to gun owners. From CCW reciprocity to amicus brief, he's been a true friend to Michiganders.

Detroit Free Press. Surely little Mitch (I've never met an illegal firearms owner I didn't like) Albom will have a follow up attack on legal firearms owners. Heck this might even get the nearly weekly front page picture of Clueless Jenny pushed off the front page.

The Free Press editorial page is liberal? A clear sign of media bias! I know this might be shocking too but the Detroit News editorial page is sometimes a little conservative. Another sign of media bias!

What with the Virginia Tech showing up in the news again, it's a good time to reflect on a missing hero. The hero to all parents, students, staff, and peoples every (temporarily for those on the left) would have been the person with a firearm available to point at the mentally challenged murderer. The lives that would have been saved... Nah, to heck with being rational. We all know common sense is an oxymoron! Guns are scarewy and used to kill wabbits!
