    Michigan Unemployment almost 13%

Reaching its highest mark since 1983, Michigan's unemployment rate rose from 12.6% in March to 12.9% in April.

The increase in the unemployed is on par with the national increase, which rose from 8.5% in March to 8.9% in April. However, Michigan's 12.9% is the highest unemployment figure in the country.

What is even more frightening is that April's 12.9% unemployment rate is up five percentage points from April of 2008's 7.9%.

    From the Detroit News:

Economists from the Michigan Treasury Department and the House and Senate Fiscal agencies last week reached a consensus that state unemployment could average as much as 14 percent this year and 15.3 percent in 2010.

Michigan lost about 38,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in April. About 22,000 of those jobs were in manufacturing and another 9,000 were in construction. About 3,000 jobs were lost in retail trade.

The only industry that showed an increase in jobs was; the government.

    How's that for "change"?

    God help us!

    See,

There are no "green jobs," that are going to stay here.  When the tax incentives run out, or the MBT gets too bad, or they get hit with all this other nonsense like Card Check... they are going to China.

But there is one green job that can't be outsourced.  See, once the State starts dictating more and more environmental standards, we are going to need inspectors.

And I don't like what you write on this blog, so I'm gonna call the DEQ and tell them that you cut your grass twice last week, or that hte insulation in your windows is not good enough, and you are therefore destroying our planet.

    Welcome to the future!

GM plans to close 16 factories, costing 21,000 hourly workers their jobs, as it tries to cut labor costs and shrink its manufacturing footprint to match lower demand for its products. Of the 16, two have been announced previously, an engine plant in Massena, N.Y., and a stamping plant in suburban Grand Rapids, Mich.

GM has about 61,000 hourly workers in the U.S. but plans to take that number down to 40,000 by 2010. The Obama administration welcomed the agreement, saying it is a positive development
