Legal organization fires back at Bash Back!By Nick, Section News
Last November RightMichigan was the first outlet anywhere in the world to tell readers about a militant homosexual organization's violent physical attack in the middle of Sunday service on congregants of Delta Township's Mount Hope Church. Now, more than six months and nearly a half-million google links after the story exploded, the Alliance Defense Fund is taking the next step. They've filed suit in United States District Court on behalf of the church, seeking an injunction against and damages from "Bash Back," the organization that orchestrated and carried out last year's assault. "They don't have the right to come in and terrorize the congregation," Kevin Theriot, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund told the Lansing State Journal. "This case would have never been filed if these folks had just stayed on the public sidewalk, held up their signs and didn't disrupt the service." Of course, they went much further than that. Read on...
After an "outside team" distracted the church's security team with an intimidating and noisy protest the "inside team" sprang into action.
Prayer had just finished when men and women stood up in pockets across the congregation, on the main floor and in the balcony. "Jesus was gay," they shouted among other profanities and blasphemies as they rushed the stage. Some forced their way through rows of women and kids, tossing fliers into the air while others hung a profane banner from the balcony. Two women made their way to the pulpit and began to kiss. According to one of their liberal political blogs they may have brought additional props as well, encouraging participants to come equipped with: "(A) video camera, a megaphone, noise makers, condoms, glitter by the bucket load, confetti, pink fabric...yeh." The video camera they put to good use as they attempted to provoke a violent reaction. The image of the pink-clad folks above is one of theirs, stating in a picture worth more than a thousand words the goals of the Michigan left. It was chiefly the behavior of the "inside team" that led to the ADF lawsuit. And the new media? That made it possible. RightMichigan's continuing coverage directly led to a flood of local, national and even global news reporting. Some left wing outlets even managed to secure interviews with perpetrators of the attack. The coverage, in tandem with police reports filed the day of the attack enabled ADF to identify by name fourteen of the militant Lefties, making the suit potentially that much more effective. The LSJ continues:
"There's a federal law that says you can't disrupt, by force or threat of force, a church service," he said. The lawsuit asks for an injunction to prevent future protests as well as nominal damages and costs related to bringing the suit.
Theriot said he expected it would be at least a year before the suit goes to court. The sooner the better. In the days following the original assault members of Bash Back told the liberal Michigan blogosphere that they were unconcerned with church goers' civil rights, that they weren't finished and that additional "actions" were on the way. The Alliance Defense Fund is doing their part to make sure they pay for it. (You can read the entire lawsuit HERE.)
