In Macomb, 9% Tax Hike Isn't Enough. They Want 20%

As Leon Drolet reported here on RightMichigan earlier this week, the Democratic Macomb County Board of Commissioners wants to raise the property tax by 9%.  But, the Democratic Macomb County Charter Commission wants more.  They want a tax hike of 20%.

While the county's largest employer, GM, prepares to shed 3,400 more jobs in May and also cut the salaries of all its workers as well, the Democrats running Macomb County just keep screaming "Give Us More, Give Us More, Give Us More."

    Read On...

As the draft Macomb County Charter begins to take shape, a document has emerged that shows the draft Charter is going to have a cap on taxes at 5.19 mills.  But, the current rate of taxation is 4.2 mills.  That would an increase of almost 20%.

The sad part of this is that Democrats are not alone in this.  At least one of the 4 Republicans on the charter commission appears to be joining the effort to hike everyone's taxes.  The handout that was prepared for the February 19th Finance/Budget Charter SubCommittee was drafted by Republican Gary Anthony, after he consulted with the county finance director, David Diegel.

In the document, Anthony lays out the case that despite the current rate of 4.2 mills, the new county millage rate should be reset to 5.19 mills.  He says that he wants to make sure that the county has enough revenue well into the future.  I guess we can officially label Anthony as an official RINO.  Conservatives do not worry about guaranteeing that government has enough revenue.  Conservatives want government to be small and efficient, not large and bloated.  And Anthony was elected by one of the most conservative areas of the County.  Not only has he betrayed his party, but he has also betrayed his constituency.

But, I imagine for Diegel, Anthony just has to be a dream come true.  They have a Republican that will help them pass higher taxes.  Ya see, Diegel used to be the campaign treasurer for Fmr. Congressman David Bonior.  We all remember him, right?  No taxes were high enough or personal freedom less important.  These days, Bonior hangs out with more Socialists and Communists than he does with even Democrats.  So, Diegel finally has a Republican that will work him to carry out the Bonior agenda.

Prepare yourselves that if this charter passes, Ann Arbor will have a partner in the People's Republic of Macomb County.

I support the Republicans, on social issues they are politically superior. Issues like guns, traditional values, ect..

When it comes to taxes, I think we are all going to get hosed, by the democrats this time around. The rich are upset about a 4% increase in there taxes. going from 35% to 39%.

Well look at us here in Macomb, how about a 20% tax increase, for ya. I think everyone is going to be ready for lower taxes come next election. So GOP guys voting for tax hikes now, may slide under the radar, and get re-elected, but voters may also remember these tax hikers, and just not go out to the polls and show support.

...that this has to be approved by the gov. and by Macomb County voters.

I see the former being a given (Granholm against higher taxes...please!), but the latter, now that could be a problem...for democrats.

Even Commissioner Gieleghem didn't appear to believe his own rhetoric when he was stumping across Macomb County last Tuesday for a tax hike.

That coupled with soaring unemployment rates, home foreclosures exploding, other governmental entities asking for money as well (i.e. East Detroit Public School District will be asking for a 2 mills for building improvements this May, City of Eastpointe asking for a 7 mil renewal for "public safety" this November and I know that there are others in the County), I see this Charter going up in flames and crashing faster than the Hindenburg.
