Lansing finding new and creative ways to rob taxpayers

When it comes to desperate folks depending on the government to make ends meet, clamoring for unemployment checks and asking the nobility...errr... the politicians in Lansing for money and a quicker response, Governor Granholm responded by hiring a bajillion more phone bank workers and sending members of the legislature into their local unemployment offices to "volunteer."

When it comes to desperate folks depending on the government to NOT take more than they're legally entitled through the property tax assessment process, so they can provide for themselves without ever having to go to the nobility... shoot, did it again... the politicians with a hand out and a "by your leave," Governor Granholm fires Tax Tribunal workers and creates a 22,000 case backlog.

Now, finally, she's offering to hire a couple dozen new "referees" to help resolve a backlog that's only getting bigger but unlike phone bankers, these folks need to go through a lengthy training process that will prevent any relief from arriving for the next three months.  You know, because if you tossed amateurs into the gig they might actually agree with taxpayers a little too much.

    The Detroit News reports:

Michael Kiwak, a 59-year-old out-of-work auto engineer from Livonia, has been waiting over a year and a half for his case to be decided. He says he's been unable to sell his home for $250,000, even though its assessed value is about $320,000.

"I'm way beyond frustration. The state of Michigan is stealing from me," Kiwak said. "The whole thing is almost criminal. We both know my property tax is way too high."

He's not the only one.  Between 2005 and 2008 the number of cases being heard at the state level has more than doubled and run to the largest level since 1993 as starving state coffers devour every dollar they can, even (and maybe especially) when they shouldn't but think they CAN get away with it.

And while Lansing steals from hardworking homeowners, exacerbating home loss and serious family financial stress the Detroit Water and Sewage Department is preparing to dramatically spike utility rates for metro-Detroiters.

    Read on...

    According to the Ivory Tower:

Department officials propose 5.1% water and 15.8% sewer rate increases for Detroiters. The suburbs would see wholesale increases of 8.9% for water and 2.4% for sewer.

The final decision on rate hikes rests with the Detroit City Council.  The same racists who are currently trying to resolve their battle with Jay Leno after that jerk white guy decided to play the Palace of Auburn Hills for free instead of a place like, oh, Cobo... leaky roof and all.

(Channeling my best game show announcer's voice) But wait, there's more!

The Grand Rapids Press reports on another new "bipartisan" tax hike plan that has Lansing bureaucrats in a dizzy, because, apparently, they're in the mood to get us coming and going this week.

The plan would do away with the need for a sticker in the window of your vehicle to enter the state parks and also eliminate the $24 annual fee. Instead, you would pay an extra $10 with your annual vehicle registration.

Your Michigan license plate will be your official entry pass the parks. If you don't want to pay the extra $10 on your vehicle registration form, you can check a box to opt out.

I know what you're thinking... `wait, Nick, that says you can opt out!'  Yep.  You can opt out.  And if you've ever renewed your vehicle registration you've seen those forms they send in the mail.  They're already about the most confusing pieces of paper the state could possibly print.  Now they're going to add a checkbox somewhere in fine print, no doubt, with a lot of legal mumbo jumbo that most folks will simply overlook.

And if you think snookering taxpayers into accidentally paying more isn't the goal please don't admit it out loud and prove to everyone you're an idiot.  State Park stickers raised $10.7 million in 2008 charging $24 for an annual pass.  This new $10 annual pass is expected to raise $47 million a year.

That's $37 million they weren't raising otherwise and an extra 4.2 million Michiganders paying taxes they would have avoided any other year.

We learned yesterday that sales tax and income tax receipts were both down dramatically during the first few months of 2009.  What do we get from the tax-hungry politicians?  Out-right theft on property taxes with a stubborn refusal to even hear appeals, spikes in water and sewage taxes (hardly luxury items) and now an extra tax on driving.

Give the nobility... shoot, no, no apologies... give the nobility a little credit... at least they're finding new and creative ways to make sure they get theirs.  If only they'd enable the rest of us to KEEP ours.

Remember the Lansing mantra: (none / 0) (#1)
by KG One on Fri Mar 13, 2009 at 12:12:57 PM EST
"You must make do with less, so we don't have to make tough decisions!"

(repeat as many times as necessary)

Gov. Granholm, Rep. Dillon, Sen. Bishop, Lansing democrats & RINO's feel free to join in anytime.

Another good fallback when people start to tire:

"It's only $X/month (or day). You won't miss that."

Yet they fail to mention the other 843 sources that want to hit us up for just $X/month...
