Kent County Republican Committee - February 2009 Executive MeetingBy Kevin Rex Heine, Section News
On Thursday, February 26, the Kent County Republican Committee (KCRC) Executive Committee Meeting was held.
County Chair Joanne Voorhees called the meeting to order at 6:01 PM. The first order of business, approving the January meeting's minutes, was dispatched quickly and with the committee's usual efficiency. Chairwoman Voorhees recognized all of the elected officials in attendance and then gave the floor to Terri Lynn Land, the current Secretary of State and 2010 gubernatorial candidate. Secretary Land stated that she is a fiscal conservative, and will run on a platform of fiscal responsibility and limited, more responsive government. She pointed out that she has been practicing these principles in her current position by reducing her department's staff only through attrition and consolidating services statewide (closing unnecessary offices in the process). Her stated goal is to have every single SOS branch office completely modernized by the end of her current term. While there is no one "silver bullet" that will solve Michigan's economic problems, Land said that she will start by recommending the termination of unnecessary, unneeded programs (specifically not touching good programs that work) instead of across-the-board cuts that do not discriminate between useful and useless government expenditures. Secretary Land also addressed the campaign finance scandal of Congressman Mark Schauer. The matter was resolved through the political negotiation process because a court case would have taken too long, cost the state too much (in an economic climate where the state is effectively broke), and an appropriately punitive result wasn't guaranteed. She noted that this is the highest fine ever assessed by the Michigan Secretary of State.
Jordan Bush reported on the work currently in progress by the Grassroots Committee. The Executive Committee discussed the report at length and referred several items back to the Grassroots Committee for further action. Chairwoman Voorhees referred all present to the CPAC live stream being offered by Fox News. Kim Yob, District Three Chair, gave the State Convention Report. State Senator Mark Jansen provided an update from the State Senate, specifically on the 19th District special election. Current polling indicates that this is a 50/50 district with strong support (≥ 57%) for Greg Nofs. Senator Jansen stated that this is the first battle of the 2010 campaign in Michigan. The Senate Republican Caucus is confident, but is expecting a fight and national-level attention. (Think direct involvement by both Stryker and Obama.) Senator Jansen offered to pay for any bus that KCRC can fill up with campaign volunteers. According to Jansen, additional battleground seats in the 2010 election campaign are expected to develop in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon. The Michigan Senate Republican Campaign Committee has pegged $12 million as their finance target for this campaign. During the public comment segment of the meeting, four topics were raised and discussed:
