So Stabenow isn't the only Dem with ethics problems?By Nick, Section News
Credit where credit is due, the Detroit Free Press is, lately, playing the role of a serious newspaper. Oh, sure, their editorial page is still full of leftist tripe and many of their writers are still on Mark Brewer's "Holiday" card list, but the good old Ivory Tower is on a bit of a roll when it comes to equal opportunity criticism across parties.
The paper was the first to tell us about Senator Debbie Stabenow's little illegal-lobbyist-as-husband issue and while they don't include it this time, today they've published an op-ed claiming Democrats are "self-destructing over ethics."
Freshman Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., is only the latest embarrassment. Disappointingly, while they cover all of the tax-cheats, bribery suspects and subjects of legal investigations, there's no mention of Michigan's junior Senator. But nobody's perfect. Small steps. And the real scandal remains the way Michigan Democrats have handled the local economy. Oh, but don't worry, Santa Claus is coming to town with a bag full of goodies for everybody. Read on...
The Granholm made a big show yesterday of unveiling their own personal Christmas-in-February list, posting on the web Michigan's 16,000 stimulus cash requests totaling $59 billion.
We might get two, three or even nine billion dollars of magic money but won't be able to fund everything. No worries, though, there's still plenty of money to spend. Because of a hidden rule somewhere in the billion-page monstrosity that is the Democrats' pork-barrel spending bill, the Governor's big budget show of cutting per pupil and higher ed funding is going buh-bye. The Detroit News reports:
Olson said the state can use money from its general fund -- its main checking account -- to protect education funding. Or the state can tap stimulus cash to keep funding at current levels, he said. But the second option could leave a hole in the budget in 2011 when the federal money goes away, Olson said. If this Democratic Congress has taught me anything its that it is patently ridiculous to worry about next year. We're short in FY2011? Go to the feds and ask for a few billion more. What are they going to say, no? They'll just borrow a little more from China and our great-grandkids and scribble the check. Inflation? Future generations? Bah. The Democrats have elections to win.
