Macomb Daily: Are pro-labor commissioners and unions in cahoots?

NO!!! Tell me it isn't so! Bend-over-for-the-unions democrats on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners in cahoots with unions. Can't be! I'm shocked! Shocked I say! Seriously though - is that even a valid question of a headline for the Macomb Daily? This story is directly linked to the one I wrote yesterday: Shenanigans in Macomb UAW Union Vote? Today, the Macomb Daily reports:

It's hard to determine who has a bigger conflict of interest here -- Democratic commissioners who are aligned with the politically powerful UAW leadership, or UAW officials who seem more closely tied to the commissioners than their own rank-and-file members. Starting with the 2006 elections, the UAW, under the new leadership of Region 1 president Joe Peters, began playing a major role in county board elections. They handed out $5,000 campaign contributions -- an extraordinary amount for a commissioner campaign -- to incumbent Democrats and their favorite Democratic candidates. In some cases, the UAW checks have represented one-fourth or one-third of the total amount raised by a candidate.
None of this is new, although I did get a raised brow from the shear quantity of political contributions (up to 1/3 of total contributions for some candidates? And nobody (MSM where art thou?) saw quid pro quo written up one side and down the other?). But this isn't the story. the story is the accusations of election fraud by the UAW membership itself. Imagine that - a union leadership disconnected from its membership. Happens. All. The. Time. From the story I posted yesterday I wrote this:
I reported earlier today that Macomb gave the UAW a mulligan, one in which the union approved (specifics to be disclosed) concessions that prevented large-scale layoffs to balance a bloated budget that the democratically-controlled Council has been mismanaging for years. The day of reckoning was today. Well, actually it was a few weeks ago when the union rejected any concessions. Today, they voted to take them. I thought that was the end of the story. I was wrong.
Yep. And the story continues. A few weeks ago, the union membership turned down any concessions to Macomb County. The leadership overrode that vote by claiming "voter irregularities," and set up a 2nd vote (the mulligan). This time, concessions narrowly passed. But how it passed is of more importance here. From a different Macomb Daily article than the one above came this:
The new results immediately created a storm of protest among many UAW employees because of claims that dozens of ballots were tainted. UAW officials would not comment on the contested election but one UAW unit chair sent an e-mail to employees Thursday morning to address the rumors that are "running wild."

The note said that the ballots cast at two departments -- the Macomb County Community Services Agency and the Animal Shelter -- were presented in a cardboard box. All other UAW units presented their ballots in a locked container.

Without the boxed ballots, the ratification vote would have failed. (emphasis mine)

I then made the following observation:
What a shock. More votes were found. Had the vote failed today, I'm sure the UAW would have been given a new mulligan. Then another. Then another. Until enough votes were "found" to give the desired result. On a bigger scale, this has happened before. Anyone remember the 2004 Washington State Governor's race? More recently, how about the Senate race in Minnesota? It should come as no surprise that the shenanigans on full national display in very critical elections happen on a much smaller scale as well. This is just par for the course.
I now wonder what the primary motivation of the leadership of the UAW was to steal this election. I had previously thought that it was simply to keep the couple of hundred county employees employed, even unhappily so, so that the UAW can collect the union dues, keep getting their pet democrats elected, etc ad infinitum. There might be a different motivation: saving their pet democrats on the Board from having to make the tough decision (a decision, mind you, that came to this because of their very own decisions). Today's MD article had this interesting snippet:
With a lot of cash invested in the board, which is now dominated, 20-6, by Democrats, some employees are convinced that their union was determined to spare the commissioners from politically tough decisions. If they could balance the budget on the backs of the workers, the commissioners wouldn't have to resort to numerous layoffs, which would mean cuts in services. And possibly a tax increase on top of that. (emphasis mine)
Indeed. Use the pawns to protect the upper-echelon. And here's some potential good news for Macomb County:
Angry employees are already pushing for a vote that would oust the UAW and choose a new union to represent their 539 members. And you can bet that in 2010, many employees will be working behind the scenes to defeat the incumbent commissioners, particularly the pro-UAW Democrats.
That would only be potential good news because it depends upon who they help elect, If a Republican, then good news. If just another democrat (although, I can't really see an anti-UAW democrat. I just can't. Seems like an oxymoron to me), then nothing will change. Then again, I can see taxpayers being angry in 2010 because of the first property tax hike in the County in more than a generation. Should the democrats lose their hegemony, things may be on the upswing in County governance. But in the end, it will take more than this scandal to wake the Macomb County taxpayers up from their apathetic slumber with everything local. I'm not willing to hold my breath just yet...

...is the fact that pizza boxes somehow became an acceptable substitute for a ballot box when they had their "do-over" election.

I'd expect this to be acceptable in some third-world country...certainly not in America.

And the fallout of P-O'ed UAW Members...hoo-boy is this shaping up to be interesting!

    Stay tuned...
