Macomb County: Thumbs up to unions, thumbs down to home owners

Macomb County, still furious that one of its Council members had the audacity to propose English as the official language of the County, saving the county money they use in printing bilingual literature, got some work done. This morning, the freep reports:

When three days of voting ended Wednesday, local units of the UAW narrowly approved a contract that calls for pay freezes, six days off a year without pay, higher out-of-pocket health care costs and pension reforms.

The UAW rejected the contract last month but revoted after the county's largest union -- American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees -- approved its contract last week. The vote may have saved more than 100 jobs.

Got that? The union was given a mulligan (can we revote on the POTUS now?). That aside, now onto business that a Democrat hegemony typically result in - raising taxes:

Now the county's Democratic leadership is preparing to deliver on its promise: raising property taxes.
Because - you know - dems keep THOSE promises (unlike others). So in a time of recession, when citizens of the county are in danger of foreclosure, of losing their jobs, of struggling to pay their bills and feed their families, property taxes are going up. Nice. How will the council sell this to the public?
The Democrats are to host four town hall meetings March 3 to explain that numerous services and jobs still are at risk without a tax increase.
Numerous services and jobs? Well, it can't be the latter now, can it? I mean the dems just promised the unions that should they take the concession they wouldn't lay off a hundred of them, right? So they'll have to argue the former - services. My prediction: they'll bring their human shields with them. It's a tried and true strategy for the dems that they use whenever they can. As I pointed out in another prior post (Macomb County cuts, and human shields),
Macomb County commissioners said Monday they have no choice but to begin laying off hundreds of employees and cut services to senior citizens, lower-income families and other residents after a key union rejected a proposed labor contract.
Human shields! I made the following observation on that tactic:
Why is it, by the way, that whenever cuts are threatened, they use children and the elderly as human shields? The good 'ol human shield negotiating tactic is tried and true, being used by about every federal agency when threatened with budget cuts. Cut the CDC budget? "But... we won't be able to find a cancer cure now!" Blah, blah, blah...

Has the MSM no shame in not calling these people out for such tactics? Macomb County has a bloated budget so we're going to have to throw grandma down the stairs? We're going to kick lower-income families to the curb? Excuse me, but can't these nitwits look at the true waste in their budgets (gold-plated health benefits, huge pension obligations, etc)???

Apparently, the MSM is still behind the curve on the tactic. Either that, or they simply agree with it (nothing to see here, folks! Just keep moving along...). Note that the MSM said that "the democrats" were going to hold the townhall meetings. Now I know that the Council is tilted 22-4 in favor of the democrats, but the Republicans on the Council are not invited? Is this the "unilateral bipartisanship" that our President has coined by his own actions? Are they going to lock the Republicans out of the town hall, as is becoming the national trend?

For the record, the freep indicates in the article (at the very end anyway) that the Republicans on the Council are opposed. Here's the telling quote:

"We haven't even gone through our budget yet to find ways to save money," said Commissioner Kathy Vosburg, R-Chesterfield Township.
About says it all, no? Why, by the way, is Macomb's budget so far in the red? Rising health care costs. Rising pension obligations. You would think they would fix these sooner rather than later (don't let the  supposed "reforms" in these fool you - they are likely smoke and mirrors). The Council doesn't think so. They just kicked the can down the road...

    Thanks for posting that.

I'd like to go to that, President Obama just decided to let me keep a few extra bucks that I earned on myself. And now the local democrats want to take it away from me.
