The Importance of Primary Elections
By Paul "Revere" Peterson What are Primary Elections anyway?
Primary Elections are elections in which major political parties decide who their candidate is going to be for the General Election. As you know in the American system, there are two major political parties, Democrats and Republicans. In any given contest between them, each party must first choose their candidate that will gain party support. Since political parties are supposed to be a vehicle by which individuals can find other persons of like mind, they band together to go choose the candidate they want to run for their party, unless, of course, it is uncontested, meaning, only one person willing to run. When there are multiple persons wanting that party's nomination to run in the General Election, they must put it before a vote of the people, not just any people, but their people: Democrats choosing the Democrat Candidate, and Republicans choosing the Republican Candidate. Simple enough...
What about minority parties?
Minority parties, such as Libertarians, do not have primaries, but prepare for the General Election by gathering petition signatures to put their candidates on the ballot. Generally, this process would naturally weed out candidates in the unlikely event of a multiple candidate race within a minority party by party members putting their signature to one candidate's petition over another. Closed Primary State vs. Open Primary State A Closed Primary State is one which follows and enforces the simple purposes of voting in primaries, again, that registered Democrats choose the Democrat Candidate, and registered Republicans choose the Republican Candidate as players in the General Election contest. However, some States have been tricked into becoming Open Primary States, such as Michigan, which convolutes the whole thing altogether. In such a state, ANYONE can switch parties to vote in a Primary Election for a candidate that is not normally in that person's party of choice, which is just plain dishonest. However, there may be time-windows that must be adhered to in the party switch, and certainly any particular person is only allowed to vote in one party's primary; therefore, anyone who switches for the sake of the Primary Election cannot then also vote in the Primary Election of the opposing party to which he would normally belong. Sadly, in Open Primary States, such as Michigan, such tactics are used to sabotage opposing parties' contests in order to blur differences between candidates, or the perception that it helps ensure victory in the General Election by picking the weaker candidate in one's opposition party. These behaviors by the Primary Electorate usually end up in wishy-washy candidates, producing a vote for the one considered the "lesser of two evils" by the General Electorate. This is a big part of the reason we have so many Progressives infiltrating the ranks of the primary parties in this country and how we've gotten close to losing our Republic today. In Michigan we MUST become a Closed Primary State to maintain the integrity of our parties. It is all part of Fixing Michigan; first we must have clear choices. The Primary Election = The REAL Election
If the TEA Parties, the Independence Caucus, and concerned party members really want to affect elections positively, giving a clear choice to defend and preserve the Republic with Constitutional Patriots, they must participate fully in the Primary Election season. This is where the actual candidate is chosen; pay attention from a year-out, prior to the election date and get to know the candidates. If not a party member, become one for a day to choose the candidate that most closely represents your ideology as an individual, and in his/her actions, not just words! For independent party voters, this is a sound strategy in the likely event that your 3rd party candidate won't get elected, or perhaps not even make it to the ballot (no offense). Naturally, I'm asking Republicans and Independents in SW Michigan to turn out for Paul "Revere" Peterson in record numbers at the Republican Primary Election, August 3rd, 2010!!
