Developer Gary Granger Threatens to 'Come After' Student Questioning Governor; Student files police report, personal protection order.
Ben Lazarus has been demanding answers from Governor Granholm about her signing a budget she vowed she would not, one without the Promise Scholarship. A student at Central Michigan University, he raised his hand during her stop on campus and asked a simple question, "Will you advocate diverting money for the State Police headquarters building to fund the Promise Scholarship?" The Michigan Promise Scholarship is a $4000 earned grant, paid over the course of one's college career, that was set to be given to over 96,000 Michigan public school students who passed the Michigan Merit Exam their junior year of high school. After vowing to veto a bill without funding for the award, Governor Granholm signed a budget that took money away from students and gave it to political contributors Joel Ferguson and Gary Granger. Her response to his question did not satisfy Ben, so he visited her at Oakland Community College Friday to ask a follow-up. This time, cameras were present. Again, Granholm did not address his question. So Lazarus, in a Fox 2 Detroit News report that aired at 5:30pm, called her out on it.
On his way back from Detroit to Mt. Pleasant, Lazarus received a call from Gary Granger, the developer responsible for the State Police project. Lazarus said, "I told Granger that I'm only going to discuss this matter with Governor Granholm and hung-up the phone." Granger defied Lazarus by calling back and leaving a voice-mail message. "He called me a liar and said I have a drinking problem," Lazarus said, "It was very uncalled for." At 4:30am Saturday morning, Lazarus received a phone call from a restricted number. "It was clear to me that it was Mr. Granger." Lazarus said. Granger told him that if he continues to spread lies, he's going to "come after him." "Expletives were exchanged," Lazarus said, "I immediately called the police and filed a formal report. There is also a personal protection order pending in Isabella County." Ben Lazarus is founder of NoBrokenPromise.com.
"Intimidation, threats and personal attacks have no place in public discussion and will not be tolerated," He said, "Michigan students and taxpayers need to know what kind of corruption is going on in Lansing."
