Future Industry of MichiganBy KroRed007, Section News
I heard it said recently that "the worst recession in decades" in the US has finally come to an end. While I pray that to be true, I fear that Michigan will remain stuck in this for quite some time. States around the country have found means to pull themselves out, but unfortunately, it seems that Michigan has lost its once-thriving auto industry for good. In its trail, the question remains about what will be Michigan's industry of the future.
To this question, many answers have been offered, but the most intriguing answer was education. Professor Ann Larabee pointed out that Michigan is already known for its wholesome and academically challenging universities and colleges. She stated that if Michigan focuses on education as an industry, markets and sells education successfully as a product, and keeps its schools in high demand, perhaps Michigan can restructure and crawl its way out of the recession.
While I like this suggestion, there are many ways in which this plan would be problematic. For one, raising the level of education at universities to a degree that would make them better than they already are would take funding - more money than Michigan can afford. Secondly, what would happen if the plan failed - if we did put money into this new industry and it failed to attract consumers? These are just a few of the troubles with an intangible product like education. I truly hope that universities see this recession as an opportunity to give current students even more for their tuition money, and as any business does to sustain itself - attracts new consumers. If the universities and colleges in Michigan can make the best out of what little budgets they have been given during these times, there is a good chance we may see education as the new Michigan industry in the future as the national economy rebuilds.
