An Honest Anti-Term Limits Argument from Skubick

(Promoted by Nick... not MY take, but an interesting one...)

I've always said that reporters are very strongly biased, but not nearly as much in a leftward or rightward way as in a lazyward way.  They want to do the least amount of work possible.  Who can blame `em?

From Michigan's most prominent political insider Tim Skubick:

"Imagine going into the office tomorrow and finding 46 new employees all of whom you have to deal with on a daily basis and you don't know most of them.  Yep..that would be a challenge and that is exactly what folks in this town are facing once lawmakers return to work next week.

46 lawmakers whom everybody knew last year are long gone, as Ernie would say, and in their seats are 46 who are basically unknown quantities.  It's a very disconcerting feeling to know that you need to get news out of these folks but frankly if you got in the elevator with anyone of them you'd have no idea if they were lawmakers, staffers or capitol tourists.

Reporters are not the only ones suffering from term limit turnover shock.  A legion of lobbyists who get paid to influence lawmakers are singing choruses of "Getting to Know You" as they move into the new legislative session.  Over the holidays lobbyists were busy sending out greeting cards to the new batch of players laying the groundwork for a new relationship.

To give you some feel for how tough this assignment is, for this particular correspondent I would recognize by face six out of the new bunch and two of those are former legislators.  That means almost 85 percent of the incoming class is a blank slate.  Which is why the picture of everyone of the newbe's is on my desk right now.  Try memorizing 40 new faces between now and January 14."

I'm a huge fan of term limits, partly for this reason.  The political class loves the old-boys (and girls) network.  They love to be secure in their power.  Reporters love having a pre-formatted system with reliable leakers, quote-makers, and press releasers.  Lobbyists like having good friends to golf with, eat with, smoke with and go to "conferences" with.  It's easiest if you already know who you can count on for what and who's in whose pocket.  There's no real sales job needed, and no starry-eyed Mr. Smith's who think they can get on without the staff, reporters, lobbyists etc., let alone shake things up.  The whole fantasy camp is pretty comfy without term limits.

It's quite obvious that term limits are not the great solution to government malfeasance, overspending, over regulation and all the other wonderful things they do.  If only it were that easy.  No, term limits do very little for reducing the size and scope of government.  They do, however, break up the deeply entrenched and firmly protected political class and bring in new clueless lawmakers on a regular basis.  That's a good thing.  The last thing I want are lawmakers who "know their way around" Lansing.  If a criminal is going to break into your house would you prefer a skittish rookie on his first heist or a seasoned thief who knows all the tricks?

Skubick Finally Has to Work for a Living (none / 0) (#1)

So, poor Tim finally has to do research and learn about people for a change.  Gee, I thought being the leading political reporter in town, learning all the new reps each year was part of his job.

Here's a solution for poor Tim, lets have term limits for the capital press corp too!!!  We should put limits on Tim, Kathy "I Just Love Jenny" Hoffman, Chris Cristoff, and that annoying guy from MIRS that wears those funny looking suits.

What a great quote by Skubick:

I like Tim Skubick's reporting but his writing is just awful.  I was at a Barnes & Noble a few months back and came across his book on the last gubernatorial election in the discount pile.  While flipping through the book I could not believe that anyone with a High School degree could actually author such a poorly written book.  I imagined my old HS English teacher taking his red pen and crossing out entire pages in Skubick's book.  However, I don't blame Skubick.  I blame the proofreaders who didn't, or wouldn't, suggest the necessary revisions.
