Were you there?!By Chazwald, Section News
Well, if you were able to obtain a prized golden ticket, you were definitely blessed! What a rarity it was. Around 1:00pm McCain-Palin supporters began to arrive and line up outside the Ford Fieldhouse on Grand Rapids Community College's campus. The adrenaline was beginning to flow as I witnessed the anticipation within the grassroots.
There was a heavy police presence as protestors organized a demonstration from across the street. I will be the first to admit protestors have their right to free speech, but how can one be so full of outright hate and judgment, yet claim to be peaceful? I cannot express in words how heart broken I was to see American flags displayed upside down or to see Iraq veterans being shown the finger. Those standing patiently in line, waiting for doors to open were mocked, called names, cussed at, and in some cases even threatened. I spoke with one of the monitoring police officer on duty tonight who described it best: "We have men and women dying for the United States so that protestors can maintain their right to demonstrate their hate for their country!" It is heart-wrenching to witness such violence and hatred toward America. It was an opportunity where we as compassionate conservatives were able to show that we were above name calling as we replied with love. Personally, I spoke with a few protestors. I listened to their opinion, thanked them for being a part of the political dialogue, flashed a smile, and was on my way. I offered them respect; I just wish we would have received the same in return. Read on...
After encountering protestors for hours, the doors were at last opened and a flood of supporters entered gleaming with enthusiasm! The atmosphere was both positive and refreshing as Senator John McCain's pick for Vice Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, seemed to have reunited the GOP.
The seats filled quickly and the anticipation grew upon awaiting the arrival of Governor Palin. This was the first Town Hall Meeting Sarah has been a part of. A Town Hall Meeting is casual as the audience has the capability to raise questions to both Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin in regards to the presidency, policy, or what have you. As aforementioned, tonight was Sarah Palin's first experience with this style or format of rally. And let me tell you, Sarah handled herself with grace, true intellect, and astounding confidence as she responded both in a clear and concise manner. If you want a picture of how Sarah Palin was tonight, just think back on her speech a few weeks ago at the Republican National Convention. After seeing her live in my home town of Grand Rapids, I can honestly say I understand why she is nicknamed the `barracuda!' And as for Maverick McCain, he was just as animated as ever. His excitement overflowed into the crowd as he so eloquently delivered straight answers to a public who desires the truth. Once the rally concluded, the crowd's enthusiasm only increased. As protestors made obscene gestures, screamed, and cussed, 2000 plus strong supporters chanted in unison, "NObama, NObama, NObama!" The vocalized phrase was so thunderous that it overpowered the protestor's declaration. As I left in the motorcade, I leave you with an image of a patriotic man who took it upon himself to spend his evening relentlessly waving an American flag across the street from the protestors out of deep love for this country all the while enduring their unceasing ridicule. What a night it was folks, I just wish you could have experienced it too.
God Bless,
