Roberts Turns Hard Left to Win Nomination

For many years, Macomb County has been the home to many moderate to conservative Democrat office holders.  For example, most of the county-wide office holders are pro-life and are considered conservative on other social issues.  The county board of commissioners has relied on bi-partisanship with a mix of Republicans and Democrats to decide the leadership of the board.  For as long as I can remember, every two years the Republicans side with the moderate Democrats to choose a leader for the board.

However, that Democratic Party in Macomb County is slowly going away.  It is giving way to a far more liberal party dominated by old friends of former Congressman David Bonior.  But, the question remains; as the leadership of the Democratic Party here goes hard left, are the voters in the general election going to follow?

Take their latest liberal nominee for State House of Representatives, Sarah Roberts.  While she did handily won her nomination, after out spending her nearest opponent by a probable 5-1 margin (when outside groups are counted), she had to go to the far left to do it.  She relied on Jon Stryker money and his "move-on.org wanna-be" Coalition for Progress in the final week to provide mailings, phone calls, and TV ads to keep her ahead.

However, to get that type of money to come in for her, Roberts had to state that she was in favor of gay marriage, affirmative action, and partial-birth abortions,.  All three issues have been decided by the voters or the legislature.  However, the results show how out of step Roberts is with the people she would like to represent.

First, let's discuss gay marriage and the Defense of Marriage Proposal that was approved statewide in 2004.  While she tells Stryker and Michigan Equality that she is in favor of it, she should notice how her district is against it by a decent margin.  The 24th House District voted for the Defense of Marriage Proposal by a 58% to 42% margin.  A 16 point spread.

Next, let's discuss affirmative action and the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative in 2006.  She had to tell special interests groups (most notably the Progressive Women's Alliance) that she was in favor of affirmative action in order to get their endorsement and their money.  But, her district voted for MCRI by a huge 69% to 31% margin.  That's a 37 point spread.

Last, let's discuss partial birth abortion.  While the people may not have spoken statewide on this issue, the legislature has shown large bi-partisan support to ban this horrible procedure.  Her district contains 7 large catholic parishes and a large Assembly of God church.  You can guarantee when this issue is raised the leaders of these churches are telling their people how monstrous it is.  Plus, while people disagree about abortion in the first trimester, it is near impossible to find a voter that would agree with aborting the baby in the last trimester.

So, as Roberts goes on to the general election, the question becomes how she tries to move back to the center and get more in line with her district.  You see Obama trying to do it every day.  He changes his stance on Iraq and oil drilling regularly.  Those issues are a bit easier to change your positions on due to them having more complexity.  But, the three issues I discussed here are pretty clear.  Either you are for them or you are against them.  Either you are for the people you want to represent or you are for the special interests that pump money into your campaign.

Sarah Roberts' campaign slogan is "Committed to Who We Are."

The question back to her is "Which `we' are you talking about?"
