IT'S TIME TO STOP PROPPING UP DETROITBy Rep Rick Jones, Section News
A blog posting by Rep. Rick Jones who represents District 71 (Eaton County) in the Michigan House of Representatives.
IT'S TIME TO STOP PROPPING UP DETROIT
Governor Granholm will soon decide whether or not to remove the Detroit mayor from office. He has harmed not just Detroit, but the entire state by his antics. Michigan has become a laughingstock of the entire nation; the mayor of our biggest city consistently lands in USA Today, not for great things happening in Detroit, but his latest scandal! Do we really want our state to continue to be characterized by the mayor of Detroit's actions? Conventions have been canceled, business has gone elsewhere. But whether or not the governor does the right thing, it is time for the tax payers to stop paying tens of millions extra for Detroit in revenue sharing. Their population has shrunk and it's time for them to cut back. Detroit receives more than 50% of all of the state revenue sharing. They get more than their fair share. If state revenue sharing was distributed on a per-capita basis then many communities would have more money and Detroit would receive their fair share. The money goes to pay for services such as police, fire, and ambulances; every city should be on an even playing ground. The giant sucking sound you hear in Michigan taxes are corrections, welfare, and Detroit. Instead of paying for the mayor to hire more relatives or pay his lawsuits, the money should be distributed fairly!
