The Consequence of a Political MonopolyBy Chad, Section News
Well, Kwame may be at the end of his mayoral run in Detroit for now. I saw "for now" because he will probably lay low for a year or two, only to resurface and replace his mother in Congress or perhaps run for mayor of Detroit again. Ridiculous you say? Not really when you consider the fact that former Washington DC mayor Marion Barry was busted smoking crack by the FBI while in office (on video no less) and served six months in federal prison only to come back to win election as a DC city councilman and ultimately returned to the mayors office. In Michigan we have state representative Bert Johnson in House District 5. Johnson is a convicted felon who spent time in prison for burglary and armed robbery. That didn't matter to the voters in his district because he happens to be a Democrat, just like Barry. So you see, Kilpatrick is by no means done politically. He will be back.
Consequently, Detroit is the perfect example of a political monopoly. Voters have chosen to suspend reality and accountability for the Democratic Party and have given them absolute control. The result has been a disaster for the city. The school system is in shambles, unemployment is astronomical, blight spreads like an infectious disease and corruption is rampant. Yet somehow people in the city blame Republicans for their problems while voting straight ticked Democrat year after year. It's mind boggling. Democrats run the entire show from the Detroit city council, to the Michigan House and Senate, to the US Congress and Senate, and all the way to the Governors' mansion and yet it is somehow "Bush's fault" that the city is falling apart. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. The CIA needs to come to Detroit and conduct a study on psychological warfare and mind control.
The casual reader may think I am promoting Republicans as the solution to the problem. Not necessarily. While I believe the Republican Party's stance on the issues is vastly superior to the Democrats, the real solution lies in the competition between the two Parties. If voters actually held Democrats accountable and elected Republicans once and awhile you would see a much different situation in Detroit. It would not take long for politicians to figure out that they would have to deliver on promises and produce results instead of lip service. The founders of our country knew this. That is why they set up three separate but equal branches of the federal government that compete for power. When one branch tries to overreach, another branch pushes it back. The same principle would help Detroit immensely. When a Democrat is not getting the job done, a Republican gets voted into office. It's a simple concept that seems to be lost on many voters here. Unfortunately, Detroit has sold its soul for a Donkey and that Donkey is kicking them when they are down.
