Congress Should Not Adjourn Without Energy Vote, President Should Call Special Session Of Congress

Yesterday, I voted against an adjournment resolution that provided for Congressional adjournment for five weeks. The vote passed narrowly, 213-212 (Roll Call 537).

So, within the next 24 hours, leadership in this Congress will pack its bags and head off for a five week vacation. If Speaker Pelosi and other leaders in Congress are unwilling to stick around and work on a comprehensive energy plan, President Bush should call a special session of Congress. According to Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution, the President has the power "on extraordinary occasions" to convene the Congress.

Right now the American people are being let down by Congressional leadership. High gas prices demand action, and we need to put all energy options on the table. More drilling, more alternatives, more conservation...this Congress needs to get serious and work on a comprehensive plan that includes all of the above and ends our dependence on Middle East oil.

Just yesterday a bi-partisan group of legislators introduced legislation that would lift most restrictions on offshore drilling and encourage the development of alternative energy sources. Read more here. This is a sign of serious progress. Some pro American energy Democrats are at least willing to talk about the issue. Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, need to come together to work on real energy solutions.

If Speaker Pelosi ever allows an energy debate and vote to actually occur, I believe a majority of Republicans and common sense, pro-energy Democrats could work together and develop a new energy policy that features more American energy production. It's time to tell House leadership no more excuses.

    Conservation (none / 0) (#2)
by NoviDemocrat on Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 12:36:41 AM EST
Who are you fooling Mr. Walberg? Republicons don't believe in conservation. Remember what your buddy Dick "Dead Eye" Cheney said?

"Conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy,"

Cheney's energy plan provided NOTHING for conservation. Where are your proposals for conservation? When you were in the Michigan House, did you oppose conservation efforts that were attacked by the home building industry until the Michigan Supreme Court ruled against them? The question Mr. Walberg is do you walk the walk? Or are you just another Republicon shill for the oil industry?
