"Victimization" Running Rampant for Macomb County Democratic Women

For years, Democrats have tried to play the victims.  During the 90's, Hillary Clinton boldly declared her husband was the victim of a "vast right wing conspiracy."  Then, when she was running against Rick Lazio for US Senate in 2000, she claimed that during the debate that she was the victim since Lazio had violated her personal space on stage.  For the past several years in Michigan, Jennifer Granholm has claimed on several occasions that she has been victim of Republicans in the legislature.  But, could this urge of Democrat women to be victims gone down to a new low?

That's the question that Chad Selweski pondered today (Sunday July 27, 2008) in the Macomb Daily.  In his weekly political column, Mr. Selweski asked the question if some recent acts of negative campaigning were actually conducted by the "victims" themselves.  Unfortunately, the Macomb Daily does not offer a complete online edition, so I apologize for having to repeat several of the facts that Mr. Selweski uses to state his case.

One example he mentions is Democratic State Representative candidate (District 24) and current Macomb County Commissioner Sarah Roberts.  A couple of weeks ago, Ms. Roberts denounced some so-called phony campaign flyers that were written and designed to look like her campaign had sent them out.  The flyers stated that how she favored partial-birth abortions, gay marriage and that she was proud to drive a foreign made car.  She ran to the press crying foul declaring that all those positions were "outright lies" (a claim that still shows up on her website as of posting time of this column).

    Read On...

But, The Macomb Daily, after publishing her declaration of herself as the victim, did some research and discovered that she really was in favor of partial birth abortion, approved of gay marriage and really did drive a foreign made car (a Subaru Outback).  And Mr. Selweski ponders that since the flyers only went to a small section of the electorate (like 200 homes in the State Rep District), did Roberts do this to herself in order to be the victim and get the headlines that stated so.

Mr. Selweski's other example is Lesia Liss, Democratic candidate for State Representative (District 28).  She cried "victim" when robo-calls were used to taint her candidacy.  The interesting thing is that after the first set of calls went out, it was followed by another robo-call about 40 minutes later apologizing for the first robo-call.  It was then followed by a third robo-call by Mark Liss, her husband and Warren City Councilman offering a $1,000 reward for knowledge on the first robo-call.

Mr. Selweski correctly states that is near impossible to arrange one robo-call, get negative feedback from the public, and then issue an apology in just 40 minutes.

That leads me to start asking that in the age where women deserve and ought to be treated as equals in society why do Democratic women feel the need to have to still be a victim to get ahead.  With organizations like National Organization of Women, the Progressive Women's Alliance and EMILY's List wanting to support women for office who are strong and will fight for their positions, do they still advance their cause by supporting women who are okay with just being "victims"?

The first statewide campaign that I volunteered on was for Ronna Romney's US Senate race in 1994.  She was the underdog and she campaigned like it.  But, during all that period of time, despite all the attacks from Democrats and Republicans that were thrown at her, I don't recall her ever playing the "victim".  If she got hit, she just hit right back.  To me, that is role model that woman politicians need to be following.  True victims are women who have to live in shelters to avoid their abusers or women who have been violated in any physical way.

But, for these woman politicians to try to advance their cause by playing the "victim card" is pretty disgraceful in my mind.  If you are woman, would you vote for someone who just wanted to just be a "victim"?  That brings to mind the Michelle Pheiffer line from "Dangerous Minds" when she said "There are no victims in my classroom."  I believe there should be no "victims" in the legislature either.

In life I have found that when people want to convince others of things that are not fact they are jealous of me or worried that I'm going to take something away from them.  If one can't make it on the facts, the truth, and strength of character, some will always choose to attack with lies, dishonest innuendo, and attempt to villainize the perceived opponent.  There will always be those who feel the end justifies the means.

If I was running there, I'd be taking a picture of that car next to a shut down auto plant and use that in a mailing.

Roberts brought that on herself. Buy American.
