What I Saw at the McCain Townhall Meeting

    (Promoted by Nick...)

I had the opportunity to see Senator John McCain's town hall in person today at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren.  As one of the 500 people in attendance, I could see how this format has worked so well for Senator McCain as he came back to win in New Hampshire.  He is very engaging and energetic with this style of meeting the public.

And, this was not an automatically friendly audience.  They were 500 employees (mostly engineers and designers) of a company that has had the talk of cutbacks and bankruptcy in the air.  The GM employees received an email on Tuesday at about 1 PM to RSVP for the event.  The first 500 to RSVP could go.  Within just 7 minutes, the RSVP's were done.  There was no screening of party affiliation.  No screening of questions.  No limits on the topics that could be talked about.  Whatever people wanted to talk about, Senator McCain would give an answer.  But, in true Senator McCain fashion, some of the answers were not what the people wanted to here.

    Read On....

The first question dealt with the issue of individual states trying to set fuel economy standards separate than those of the federal government CAFE requirements.  And the Senator's answer is not what the group wanted to hear.  The domestic auto industry, which already finds the new government requirements (Senator McCain voted for)  "challenging", would prefer a federal government solution, rather than a state by state solution.  However, Senator McCain answered with a state's rights argument that the states have the right to regulate on their own.  And, then he suggested that the CEO's of the domestic automakers meet with the governors to gage what their needs were.  So, apparently Senator McCain would prefer that the automakers not only deal with the huge NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration), but also with 50 mini-NHTSA's.

The next subject raised questions as well.  The questioner gave an impassioned speech in defense of the unborn and how the next president must be one to fight for the rights of the unborn by overturning Roe v. Wade, fighting embryonic stem cell research and human cloning.  He then asked directly if Senator McCain will be the champion of these issues, which the Senator's immediate response was "Yes, I will."  This is again problematic, since back in October during the only presidential debate held in Michigan, Senator McCain said that was in favor of embryonic stem cell research.  So, either he missed that part of the question or his position has migrated to the correct one.

Other issues were discussed as well.  He covered questions on energy policy and health care.  Senator McCain gave his appraisal of the success of the troop surge (that Obama said was doomed to failure) and what was needed to be done to handle Iran. He also had to deal with a questioner who at the end of here statement belittled Senator McCain's comment of "I know how to win a war" by saying to him "We didn't win the Vietnam War."   Well, that was a war he had a hard time leading, since he was kinda held up at the time.

I came away with more questions than when I walked in, which is typical when I see Senator McCain in action.  But, I do come to the conclusion that I agree with him 70-80% of the time.  I normally align myself with candidates that I agree with 95% - 100%.  So, this becomes new territory for me.  I do give him credit that is takes guts and courage to enter a room of people whom you don't know and know very little about and then just give them the answers that you have, rather than what they want to hear.  And, in today's state of politics and government, that is a bit refreshing.

One last note:  One of the guests present for the event was Scott Romney, Govenor Mitt Romney's brother.  Let the VP speculation continue.

At the opening of the Great Lakes Office in Farmington, where Mitt was the featured speaker, Scott was introduced as one of the Co-Chairman of the McCain Campaign, I believe along with Chuck Yob and Holly Hughes.

Thank you RightMichigan.  It is refreshing to here from somebody that was actualy there.  This is what the blogosphere is all about. A little inside stuff.  If as most Americans we were left to the major Media, we would hardly hear the McCain even had a town hall meeting.  Now we can feel through your piece that we were there.  Good work and Thanks,

Any body see a type of Truman and Dewey thing going on.  Is it possible for the common sense of the masses to prevail here?  Oh well you never know.
