The Marietta Update (Because you won't get one from her or MDP)By Nick, Section News
It was a week ago now that anonymous MDP "consultants" started telling the press that Marietta Robinson was their gal to take on the incumbent Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Cliff Taylor. An announcement was imminent, we were told, except that Mrs. Robinson was on a European adventure of one sort or another and only available via e-mail.
She took the opportunity to confirm her interest in the position but not her candidacy and thus, we waited. Mark Brewer must be disappointed in what's turning into another lengthy delay in the process of what he'd have you believe was the inevitable, the defeat of an incumbent Chief Justice. But if Robinson's his candidate the man had better get used to disappointment. Which shouldn't be too tough since she's already given him plenty of practice. Read on...
She disappointed Democrats when she lost, spectacularly, to the same Cliff Taylor back in 2000. She disappointed further when she flamed in her bid for the Party's nomination to take on then political neophyte Mike Cox in the 2002 Attorney General's race. (And for an established party player and jurist with statewide name ID to lose to a career bureaucrat with no legal experience, believe me, that was a spectacular flame job.) Heck, she even disappointed the Governor and Brewer when she hitched her wagon to the Obamarama instead of their gal, the junior Senator from New York.
So disappointing is her potential candidacy that the Democratic Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Paul Condino, spoke up on the record the same day we profiled Marietta here on Right Michigan, expressing his preference of a Deborah Thomas high court bid, something even more anathema to MDP big-wigs than another inevitable Robinson failure. And here we sit, a week later, nineteen months after Brewer began his Stryker funded campaign to find the perfect candidate and the Democrats still don't have one, desperately hoping to avoid having to hitch their hopes and dreams and prayers... wait, scratch that (do Democrats pray if they're not bitter and clinging?), their hopes and dreams... to a twice-failed candidate Robinson. All of that pretty much makes her my favorite candidate ever. And in case any of the rest of you are worried about her credentials, take a look at this non-scientific online web survey being conducted by Michigan Lawyers Weekly, the state's leading publication for trial attorneys and ambulance chasers. At last check the lawyer with zero bench experience was leading the long-tenured Chief Justice of the highest court in Michigan 90% to 10%. And that includes the five times I voted for Justice Taylor! The Sam Bernsteins and Dale Spriks of the world want two things right now. To help you sue your insurance company (for... you know, whatever) and to elect Marietta Robinson to the Michigan Supreme Court. Which should tell you about all you need to know. I can hardly wait for Lawyers Weekly's inevitable article "revealing" their poll results and telling us why it means Taylor must really suck after all. Maybe by the time that next issue goes to print Mark Brewer will have convinced Robinson to accept that $10 million in campaign cash from Stryker and his radical gay special rights lobby. Then again, maybe not. Six or seven folks have already turned down the extremist's money and this latest all-but-certain candidate hasn't signed on the dotted line yet. Gerald R. Stahl would be so disappointed.
