Imagine a man beating up on a woman, once or twice but not everyday, and everyone, including the woman, deeming it okay because all of the other amazing things he does for her. Perhaps the woman has been given a hand up or out and she's dripping in jewels and living in a mansion so, it's okay.
Hate speech seems to be treated like this. Perhaps hate speech is actually okay for some but not for others, depending on other things they may be doing that is helpful, or how often.
Though "how often" has been suggested as a reason to give someone a pass (on hate speech) this can't be the criteria either. We've seen people loose their jobs because of a sound bite. Then we hear others suggesting that there are certain people who should not be held to this standard. I would have thought that it is always wrong and should never be allowed. I guess that's not true either. There are many things that are divisive. This is another. Hate speech is divisive and intended to be so by the user.
