    what should teachers be paid?

in most districts teachers cost-of-living has plummeted in the past decade. given what teachers do (spend more time each week with your kids than you do--and the primary agents for instilling knowledge and wonder to your child), i think whatever they make isn't enough. so i think it could be better if you look at it in that context.

as far as "who should pay for it..." citizens pay all salaries of all employees in michigan (and elsewhere). who foots the bill when a corporation gets millions and millions of dollars in "tax incentives"? the money comes from somewhere. we have to stop parroting this myth that the "public sector" is this cash-drain on taxpayers and that "private" companies aren't. baloney.

and it occurs to me that many people who bitch are the ones that never pay a cent in income taxes anyway (by the tax write-offs, tax credits, kid credits, etc) are factored in.

...teachers are above everyone else, and therefore must be paid more because you feel that it is the right thing to do.

Great! Now tell me where families can cut from their budgets to make up for this increase in pay? Skip those pesky doctor visits? Only renew half of their prescriptions? Purchase their food only from the dollar store?

What is it? I'd really like to know.

And no, I don't agree with government targeted tax "incentives".

If taxes are too high for once particular business/group of people, then they're too high for everyone.

"Not paying income taxes"? I wish!

I'm still in the process of working with my tax guy to get that mess organized...so nice try sport!

They're not above everyone else. But they're not slave labor like you wish them to be, either.

This conversation is penny wise and pound foolish: you want to cut consumers off at the knees by slashing wages (but keep buying!), yet support wholeheartedly George W's global warfare policies that will cost every man, woman, and child in this country and in the next generation close to $10k each.

Just think what our schools could do that dough ;) Just think what they could do with the lottery money (all of it) that was promised when we were sold on that scam.

Nah, that's not the answer: the answer is to slash workers wages!

    Good grief.

(sign in front of the pyramids): "You can do anything you set your mind to with vision, determination, and an endless supply of expendable labor"--despair, inc.

Are we talking about the same thread? (none / 0) (#12)

You have an interesting grasp on economics and basic civics to say the least.

Do you know where the money comes from that pays teachers, support staff, etc?

    (Hint:It comes from taxes.)

Do you know who pays those taxes?

(Hint:It comes from taxpayers who are also residents.)

I noticed that you like to throw around the term "slave".

Tell me: How would you describe an individual whose property and income was not their own, but belonged to someone else?

Get back to me whan you arrive at that answer.

(Final hint: It has nothing to do with GWB.)
