Michigan Democrat Super Delegates: Look For The Union Label!By Nick, Section News
Sing it with me now. No, wait. Please don't.
If you've been following the news surrounding the Democrat Presidential selection process lately there's one phrase that's being discussed almost as frequently as Barack Obama's plans to undo legally held and binding election results in Michigan in an attempt to change the results. Super Delegate. We don't have super delegates here in the GOP. We've got delegates. They're selected by each Congressional District caucus at the State Convention based on their presidential preference (there's paperwork and pledges they have to fill out and sign). We've got "at-large" delegates. They're selected by the convention as a whole on Saturday morning and go to the candidates proportionally based on their performance statewide. There are a few folks in Party leadership who are automatically at-large delegates and then some other folks are added to the list. Democrat super delegates are a different beast. Their support isn't pledged to anyone and they're free to support whoever they'd like. They could all show up at the convention and toss their votes behind Al Gore if they wanted to (and wouldn't THAT be fun). But why all the fuss in the press? The race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is so close at this point that a handful of these unpledged super delegates could literally choose the nominee and the next leader of the free world (heaven forbid). So just who are the men and women in Michigan who might literally hold the fate of the world in their hands and what axes do they have to grind? The names that follow were selected by the Michigan Democrat Party to serve as the State's official super delegates. Assuming, of course, that somehow the stars align and heaven opens and a miracle descends like a dove and Howard Dean and the DNC decide to stop treating Michigan like it's carrying a nasty communicable disease. And it appears as if the Michigan Democrat Party looks for the union label... Read on...
Maybe more interesting than who Brewer supports, though, is the transition point he represents in the super delegate list. Want to know who owns the Michigan Democrat Party? Look at their Chairman and some of the other names added to this list (as opposed to the previous names who are automatically super delegates).
