    First things first...fix the BCS.....

Just put some common sense into it.........

Well, its that time of year again.  Not Christmas time, although it is....not shopping season, although it is that too, but BCS season....yes that time of year when soooo many people will gripe about the college football ranking system and longingly wish for a change.  Yes, that is what we want is change...change change change.

Funny, that is what we asked for back in the good ole days when the AP and UPI voted for the national champion....and some bright bloke came up with the BCS.  I guess not all change is good.   Too bad we didn't remember that back in early November.

    Anyway, I digress.....

The BCS doesn't work to everyone's satisfaction.  Statement of the obvious, I know.  It is probably better than the previous all-voting system, but still, it's terribly subjective and every year people will complain about someone being left out.

Now mind you, undefeated Ball State, Utah and Boise St would NOT have vied for a national title under the previous system either, but at least there is a game to finish things off.  So its better.....maybe not much, but it is better.

That said, I can say that this is one area that I and El-presidente-elect agree upon.  There needs to be a different solution.  So let us look at it a minute.  Opponents have three major issues to making a playoff happen, so lets list them out and make a solution that works.

    1.    Too many games - back in the day, teams used to play only 11 games in the regular season, plus the bowl game.  This year, most major teams will play 12 or 13 games, plus several will play an extra game for the conference championship.  The solution is easy.  Teams that wish to compete for the national title will play only 11 games (12 if your conference has no championship game).  Easy enough.
    2.    Games interfere with classes - um, boy this one makes me chuckle.  But seriously...if you do #1, the last game of the regular season would be around Thanksgiving, the first playoff round could be the first week of December and the rest after finals.  Problem solved.  Next.....
    3.    Tradition - ok...this is the hard one.  We have been playing bowl games for a century now and we really don't want to scrap them entirely.  But then, who really watches the Motor City Bowl anyway?  So lets give some of the games some importance.....

    So here is my plan......

Sixteen teams qualify.  I know most people say eight, but lets do it right.  Sixteen.  The qualifiers would be (drum roll)....the conference champs of the six major conferences, any Division I undefeated team and the remainder would be chosen based upon a BCS style ranking system.

Conference champs are obvious choices.  They won the conference, they deserve to be in.  Sorry to the minor conferences, but play your cards right and you might be included in the future.

Undefeated team deserve to get a chance.  It sucks for Utah, Ball and Boise to not have a title shot this year when they haven't lost a game.

The rest, hey, you have to pick them.  With sixteen teams in it, only a couple teams will whine about not getting in, but at they will be far enough back that no one will pay attention.  Really, who ever complains about the team that didn't make the March Madness tournament?

Ok, so the playoffs....first game will be at the home stadium of the #1 through #8 seed teams.  Quarterfinals will be played as part of four minor bowls around Christmas time.  Semifinals will be two major New Years Day bowl games and the Championship game a week or two later at another major bowl.  Bowl games can rotate the way they do now in the BCS system.

Only four teams in the country will play more than 14 games, and hey, you want to be champs, suck it up and play.  The bowl system is intact, lots of teams get a shot at the title, and the hoopla will be amazing.

Ok, that problem is solved.  Tomorrow we will take the same common sense approach and apply it to the banking bailout.......

I feel like a fireman with a Nextel phone.

Just so you know, I picked that one because it was the first one I had seen.  I want to keep the bowls because it is a special tradition we have.

    Playoff System (none / 0) (#3)
by Kevin Rex Heine on Sun Dec 07, 2008 at 06:16:47 PM EST
I wrote an essay on this very thing . . . back in 1991.  (I was stationed in Key West, and killing my spare time by pursuing an Associate Degree in Computer Programming.)

I don't have the essay immediately at hand, but the basics of the format I suggested were like this:

    • Sixteen-team initial pool.  This will allow each conference champion (all 11 of them), the best independent, and the four "best of the rest" to be involved.  Alternately, the best independent gets in only if it's one of the five "best of the rest".  Either way, each conference champion is in.

    • Brackets.  Seed the teams just like they do in the Division 1-AA format.  (I believe that the same method is used in every other college sports playoff system, but I could be wrong.)

    • First round is played on the New Year Holiday.  Four games on New Year's Eve, and the other four on New Year's Day.

    • Play the college games on the same weekends as the NFL games.  This will have the College Quarter-Final and Semi-Final games on the same weekends as the NFL Division and Conference Championship contests.  FOX and CBS carry the pro games; ABC and NBC carry the college games.  Set your TiVo.

    • College Bowl tied to Super Bowl.  Think about this; the College Bowl is played on the Saturday of, and in the same city as, the Super Bowl.  Imagine the television ratings; imagine the economic stimulus.

And, ultimately, this format will produce a result that cannot be argued.  No matter how teams were ranked during the season, the winner is the one who stands alone atop the playoff mountain.
